ePrescribing Setup

Before you begin Before you use the NextGen® Enterprise EHR ePrescribing feature, the following ePrescribing setup procedures must be completed: Install NextGen® Communication Services (NCS). Enable Surescripts functionality in NCS. Note: Before you attempt to set up ePrescribing, you must contact NextGen Healthcare Support to install and configure NCS. Download the Surescripts pharmacies. Map unmatched pharmacies and add unmatched pharmacies as new. Check the pharmacy service level. Enroll the providers in the Surescripts network. Set up eRx permissions for the providers. Set up ePCS (Electronic Prescriptions of Controlled Substances) for authorized providers. Set up tabs and categories for eRx refills and eRx errors in the Workflow module's task list. Set up workgroups for eRx refills and eRx errors in the Workflow module. Electronic Prescriptions

You can electronically submit a prescription directly to a selected pharmacy. The ePrescribing feature uses the Surescripts retail and mail-order networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator. You should remember the following points before submitting prescriptions electronically: Any medication you submit electronically must have a valid patient's Rx eligibility request, a valid SIG, a numeric quantity value, and a unit type. When resubmitting (including responding to refill requests) a medication previously prescribed without a valid unit type, you must update the unit type to a valid value. You can submit controlled substances electronically only if ePCS is set up. User-defined medications are not supported with Surescripts. You cannot send a medication that is not DEA Schedule 0 without the required setup. If you need supervision, you cannot send a prescription without selecting the appropriate supervising physician. Electronic Prescribing (eRx) Refill Requests

When you electronically submit patient medication prescriptions to a pharmacy, you may receive a refill request from that pharmacy. These refill requests are unsolicited and until you respond to a request, you have no other interaction with the pharmacy that requested the refill. Each refill request creates a task in the Workflow module and the Manage Refills window in the Medications module. For more information on working with eRx refill requests in the Medications module, go to the NextGen Healthcare Success Community, and download the latest Medications and Medication Allergies Modules User Guide forNextGen®Enterprise EHR and ePrescribing User Guide forNextGen®Enterprise EHR. NextGen® Enterprise EHR evaluates the status of the medication in the patient's chart. If the request can be matched to an existing patient, the information appears with the option to approve or deny the request. An alert appears if a matched refill request is linked to an inactive medication. Note: A mismatch

The NextGen® Enterprise EHR Medications module enables you to prescribe, print, fax, and e-prescribe (requires enrollment) patient medications. The Medications module also enables you to educate patients on medications prescribed to them, and check whether the prescribed medication has adverse interactions with other prescribed medications, existing allergies, or known diagnoses.
