Narcotics Addiction DEA Number

The Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA 2000) permits qualified physicians to obtain waivers that expand the settings in which they can prescribe certain medications containing buprenorphine, which treat opioid addiction and dependence. Instead of being limited to only opioid treatment program settings, qualified physicians would be able to prescribe FDA-approved schedule III, IV, and V narcotics in any practice settings (for example, in an office, community hospital, or health department). Each of these physicians is allotted a unique Narcotics Addiction Drug Enforcement Administration Number (NADEAN) waiver identification number. It is also known as the "X" DEA number.

To require the NADEAN for applicable prescriptions, you can perform the setup listed below. Then, the number will be sent when a prescriber chooses an opioid treatment medication to comply with the DATA 2000 statue.

  • You can enter the NADEAN for applicable providers.
  • You can denote relevant medications as requiring NADEAN for the base ingredient or at the class level.
  • If necessary, you can denote relevant diagnosis codes as requiring NADEAN. By default, relevant diagnosis codes are already marked as requiring NADEAN.
