User-Defined Medications

In compliance with the requirements of the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT), NextGen® Enterprise enables you to add User Defined Medications (UDM). You can add a User-Defined Medication through File Maintenance or in the Medications module. A user-defined medication can be added only if that medication does not exist in your database.

All user-defined medications are assigned a generic sequence number (GSN). The GSN uniquely identifies a product and formulation specific to its agent, dosage form, strength, and route of administration. The GSN is not unique across manufacturers or package sizes.

It is strongly recommended you add only a single User Defined Medication. All users should select that one user-defined medication. After a Medication Update is performed, it is recommended that you run a report on all user-defined medications and whenever possible, select the recently added medications.

To add a new user-defined medication using the Medications module, you must set the Allow Entry of User Defined Medication preference to True in the Medication Universal Preferences. For more information about universal preferences, go to NextGen Healthcare Success Community and download the latest System Administrator Guide for NextGen® Enterprise.
