Electronic Prescriptions

You can electronically submit a prescription directly to a selected pharmacy. The ePrescribing feature uses the Surescripts retail and mail-order networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator. You should remember the following points before submitting prescriptions electronically: Any medication you submit electronically must have a valid patient's Rx eligibility request, a valid SIG, a numeric quantity value, and a unit type. When resubmitting (including responding to refill requests) a medication previously prescribed without a valid unit type, you must update the unit type to a valid value. You can submit controlled substances electronically only if ePCS is set up. User-defined medications are not supported with Surescripts. You cannot send a medication that is not DEA Schedule 0 without the required setup. If you need supervision, you cannot send a prescription without selecting the appropriate supervising physician. Electronically Submit a Prescription

In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, open the Medications module. Select a medication. On the medication details toolbar, select Send. Note: If the pharmacy associated with the medication is hidden, a message appears with an option to select another pharmacy. The Send Prescription window opens. For multiple medications, all associated pharmacies must be active before you can send the medications. Only providers who are enrolled in ePrescribing and assigned a Surescripts Provider Identifier (SPI) can submit prescriptions electronically. If you are not enrolled, a message appears indicating that no SPI is allocated. You can contact your system administrator to check your enrollment details and see the Select a Supervising Physician section in File Maintenance. Optional: To remove a hidden pharmacy message from the Alerts section, select a destination pharmacy that is not hidden in the Destination field or through the Manage Patient Pharmacies link. Manage Patient Pharmacies

Use the Manage Patient Pharmacies link on the Send Prescription window to add the following default pharmacies: Primary pharmacy Secondary pharmacy Mail-order pharmacy In the Send Prescription window, select Manage Patient Pharmacies. Note: You must have the right to add prescriptions, and ePrescribe must be enabled for the Manage Patient Pharmacies link to appear. The Manage Patient Pharmacies window opens. Manage Patient Pharmacies window Select the ellipsis button next to the enter of pharmacy you want to search for. The Pharmacy Search window opens. Search and select a pharmacy. For the primary and secondary pharmacies, you can search and select either a retail or mail-order pharmacy. For mail-order pharmacies, a mail-order pharmacy must be selected. Multiple Destinations and Internal Pharmacy

You can dispense a patient's medications to multiple destinations at the same time if a patient requires some medications be sent by mail order pharmacy and others sent to their local retail pharmacy. All medications (or if no medications designated for the interface transmission were selected) are marked to be submitted to the patient’s preferred pharmacy by default. You can also specify the destination through the right-click menu with the following options: Send to Default Retail Send to Mail Order The following setup is required to enable submission of patient medications to an internal pharmacy or multiple destinations: To enable the ability to send medications to multiple destinations, you must select the Allow Sending eRx to Multiple Destinations check box on the Medication list of the Practice Preferences window. Prescribe a New Medication

You can prescribe a new medication to a patient from the Medication Search window. Note: NextGen® Enterprise EHR automatically checks a new prescribed medication against the patient’s other prescribed medications and displays an alert if a drug interaction exists. NextGen® Enterprise EHR displays an alert for inactive ingredients with the associated allergic reactions and the percentage of available formulation that contains the inactive ingredients. Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR. Open Medications module. Select Prescribe New. The Medication Search window opens. Search for a medication. Note: If you select a medication that is a duplicate of an active or a pending medication for the patient, or if you select a medication that has contraindications to an existing patient's diagnosis, NextGen® Enterprise EHR displays a warning message. Send Medications to Multiple Destinations

In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, open the Medications module. Select a medication. On the Medications toolbar, select Send. Note: If the pharmacy associated with the medication is hidden, a message appears with an option to select another pharmacy. The Send Prescription window opens. Note: For multiple medications, all associated pharmacies must be active before you can send the medications. Optional: To remove a hidden pharmacy message from the Alerts section, select a destination pharmacy that is not hidden in the Destination field or through the Manage Patient Pharmacies link. To fax the prescription, select Force to Fax. To set the selected pharmacy as the default primary pharmacy, select Patient's Primary Default Pharmacy.
