Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

As a regulatory requirement, states can mandate that you view a patient’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) reports before prescribing controlled substances, such as narcotics, sedatives, stimulants, and drugs of concern. With PDMP, you can receive a detailed list of a patient’s controlled substance history and NarxCare scores at the point of care. The PDMP integrated functionality, using Bamboo Health PDMP Gateway, can help eliminate fraud, risk, and crime while ensuring compliance and increasing patient safety. For this service, you, as a client, must contract directly with Bamboo Health for a small annual provider fee. Some states may cover this fee for their prescribers. Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Setup

The Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) setup involves the following procedures: In File Maintenance: Enable PDMP Gateway. or Enable State PDMP. Note: The Enable State PDMP option enables non-Bamboo Health users to document that they have checked the state's PDMP website outside of NextGen® Enterprise EHR. If necessary, specify whether PDMP report review is required. Select the PDMP Gateway role. In System Administrator: Set up user and provider relationship to Self. If necessary, set up PDMP reports to automatically generate. Verify the PDMP Production API URL. Grant PDMP report security rights to user groups. Note: If you have firewall or proxy restrictions, you should grant access to the URL pdmp.nextgen.com on workstations where you are using NextGen® Enterprise EHR. If your domain supports wildcards, you can grant access to *.pmpgateway.net. Submit Electronic Prescriptions of Controlled Substances

In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, open the Medications module. Select Prescribe New. The Medication Search window opens. Select a controlled substance to prescribe. On the medication details toolbar, select Send. Note: If the Prescribed Elsewhere check box is selected, the Print and Send buttons are unavailable. You must review the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) report that is generated automatically when you prescribe a controlled substance. The Send Prescription window displays the logo and appropriate fields for the configured ePCS authentication method. Send Prescription Note: If you select multiple medications, then you can send medications to multiple destinations. From the Destination list, select a pharmacy. You can also search for a pharmacy and then select the pharmacy. If the patient does not have a default or preferred pharmacy, select Patient's Primary Default Pharmacy. Generate PDMP Reports to Review Patient's Controlled Substance Information

In the Medications module, select PDMP. A message appears stating that the report is generating. If the request is sent successfully and you have viewing rights, the report automatically generates. If you do not have viewing rights, a message appears indicating the request was sent successfully. If the request fails or displays errors, select Retry to generate the report again or select Cancel to continue. If the request includes multiple states and the request for one or more states fails, the report information appears for the successful states and alerts you for the failed states. Review the report and select Close. The PDMP reports' view is audited by the system. Note: The report remains available for 24 hours. After that, you must generate the report again. In System Administrator, from View > Universal Preferences > Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, do the following: To automatically generate Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) reports when a user creates an encounter in NextGen® Enterprise EHR, set the Initiate automatic PDMP upon New Encounter preference to True. To automatically generate PDMP reports when a user opens the Medications module, set the Initiate automatic PDMP upon opening med module preference to True. Note: The default value for both preferences is False. If you do not set the preferences to True, users with the PDMP Request and PDMP View security rights can request and generate PDMP reports manually. Preference Verify that the PDMP API URL preference displays the PDMP Production API URL to support Bamboo Health API v5.1. This URL is used to generate PDMP reports within NextGen® Enterprise EHR.
