ePCS Restrictions on Printing and Faxing of Medications

If you print or fax a controlled substance prescription, you cannot eRx that prescription. If you ePrescribe a controlled substance, you can print or fax the prescription. However, the printed or faxed report must indicate that the printed or faxed copy is not for dispensing. If you ePrescribe a controlled substance and the transmission fails, you can print or fax the prescription. However, the printed or faxed report must display a message stating the prescription was originally sent electronically to a pharmacy. The pharmacy’s name must be shown along with the date and time of the eRx message. It must also show that the eRx message failed. You must be aware of local and state laws regulating faxing of controlled medications. These regulations may be stricter than Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Federal Regulations. Prescribing Medications Requiring Narcotics Addiction DEA Number

Before you can prescribe medications that require a Narcotics Addiction Drug Enforcement Administration Number (NADEAN), the following conditions must be met: You are enrolled with the Surescripts network of pharmacies with ePCS level access. Your Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number accompanies the narcotic prescription. The patient is diagnosed with opioid dependency or addiction. Your NADEAN must be in the system. Note: The system sends NADEAN in the electronic prescription when you prescribe a new prescription, respond to a refill, or perform RxChange transactions for medications containing buprenorphine. The workflow to submit prescriptions that require NADEAN: Prescriber selects a valid ICD code for opioid treatment. Prescriber selects one of the FDA-approved schedule III, IV, and V narcotics used to treat opioid addiction and dependency for the patient. Enter Imprivata Confirm ID Two-Factor Authentication Credentials for ePCS

If your ePCS authentication is set up to Imprivata Confirm ID, on the Send Prescription window, the Authentication Required to Sign Controlled Substances section displays the Imprivata logo and authentication panel. Imprivata Confirm ID requires two-factors of credentialing for successful authentication. The first factor options are fingerprint, OTP (one-time-password) token, and password. The second factor is always Imprivata ID code, which is OTP. Authentication Required to Sign Controlled Substances Enter the first factor authentication option. The authentication section updates with the second factor authentication option. Authentication Required to Sign Controlled Substances Enter the Imprivata ID code and then select the adjacent arrow. After your identity has been authenticated, the Send button becomes available to submit the prescription electronically. The RxPrint and RxFax reports include information, in accordance with DEA mandates, to increase the safety and effectiveness of electronic transmissions of controlled substance prescriptions. These reports display the following information when you print or fax a controlled substance prescription based on the following conditions: If you refax or reprint an electronic prescription for a controlled substance, a COPY NOT FOR DISPENSING watermark is shown on the report. If the electronic transmission for the prescription fails, the following occurs: A message displays that the transmission failed On the report or the fax, a section displaying the original electronic transmission information, including the date and time the prescription was sent, name of the pharmacy and the pharmacy address displays for the sender's information. Submit Electronic Prescriptions of Controlled Substances

In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, open the Medications module. Select Prescribe New. The Medication Search window opens. Select a controlled substance to prescribe. On the medication details toolbar, select Send. Note: If the Prescribed Elsewhere check box is selected, the Print and Send buttons are unavailable. You must review the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) report that is generated automatically when you prescribe a controlled substance. The Send Prescription window displays the logo and appropriate fields for the configured ePCS authentication method. Send Prescription Note: If you select multiple medications, then you can send medications to multiple destinations. From the Destination list, select a pharmacy. You can also search for a pharmacy and then select the pharmacy. If the patient does not have a default or preferred pharmacy, select Patient's Primary Default Pharmacy. DEA Application Requirements

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) requires the application to restrict printing, faxing, and electronically prescribing controlled substances. The application applies the following rules for controlled substances: If you printed or faxed a controlled substance prescription, you cannot electronically send that prescription. If you electronically prescribe a controlled substance, you can print or fax that prescription. The printed or faxed report indicates that the printed or faxed copy is not for dispensing. If you electronically prescribe a controlled substance and the transmission fails, you can print or fax that prescription. The printed or faxed report shows a message stating the prescription was originally sent electronically to a pharmacy.
