Prescribe a New Medication

You can prescribe a new medication to a patient from the Medication Search window. Note: NextGen® Enterprise EHR automatically checks a new prescribed medication against the patient’s other prescribed medications and displays an alert if a drug interaction exists. NextGen® Enterprise EHR displays an alert for inactive ingredients with the associated allergic reactions and the percentage of available formulation that contains the inactive ingredients. Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR. Open Medications module. Select Prescribe New. The Medication Search window opens. Search for a medication. Note: If you select a medication that is a duplicate of an active or a pending medication for the patient, or if you select a medication that has contraindications to an existing patient's diagnosis, NextGen® Enterprise EHR displays a warning message. Enter the medication's details. Select a SIG and enter additional medication information. Perform a manual drug interactions check. Save the prescribed med

Prescribe Medication Using the Real-Time Prescription Benefit

In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, open the Medications module. Run the Rx Eligibility for the patient, and then select Prescribe New. Search for and select the medication using the formulary search option. The medication you selected appears under the Temporary status. Temporary Status Select the applicable pharmacy. Enter the medication quantity and day supply. The day supply value is calculated by dividing the prescribed quantity by the daily doses. The field supports up to three numeric values. Note: The estimated cost of the medication for the patient appears, and the Show Alternatives/Pricing Coverage link becomes available. Select Show Alternatives/ Pricing Coverage. The Alternatives/Pricing Coverage window opens and displays the alternative medication options, the patient’s deductible, and additional pricing coverage details. Medication Interactions

A new medication prescribed to a patient or an existing medication being renewed can have a negative interaction with either an allergy or another medication previously prescribed. The medication can create a disease contraindication or be a duplicate of an already prescribed medication. The medication interaction process checks for all possible instances and displays a Drug Interaction window that lists all interactions, contraindications and duplications. The Drug Interaction window display of drug and allergy/drug interactions, disease contraindication, and geriatric and pediatric precautions is based on the display levels set for the system and a specific user. The medication interaction process does not perform checks on user-defined medications and allergies. Patient Medication Trigger Overview

If you are using the Patient Medication trigger to prescribe a new medication to the selected patient, the trigger supports both the NDC ID and the Med ID. Contact your system administrator regarding the specific setup of your templates. The Patient Medication Renew trigger now displays a SIG dispensable message for a medication with weight-based dosing for a pediatric patient. The message requires you to confirm if you want to use the new dispensable SIG or the original SIG. To use the Patient Medication Education or External Reference trigger in NextGen® Enterprise EHR: You can enter the External Drug Reference Site URL under Medications preferences.
