Prescribe Medication using Real-Time Prescription Benefit

  1. In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, open the Medications module.
  2. Run the Rx Eligibility for the patient and then select Prescribe New.
  3. Search and select the medication using the formulary search option.
    The medication you selected appears under the Temporary status.

  4. Select the applicable pharmacy.
  5. Enter the medication quantity and day supply.
    The day supply value is calculated by dividing the prescribed quantity by the daily doses. The field supports up to three numeric values.
  6. Select Show Alternatives/ Pricing Coverage.
    The Alternatives/Pricing Coverage window opens which displays the alternative medication options. The window also displays the patient’s deductible and additional pricing coverage details.

  7. To view the pharmacy details for a specific coverage, hover over the coverage details.
  8. To view the entire name and strength of a specific drug, hover over the drug name.
  9. To change the prescribed medication, select a cost-effective alternative, and then select Replace.
    The alternative medication you select replaces the originally prescribed medication in the medications details section, and the pharmacy, SIG, and units are updated based on the alternative medication.
  10. Enter the quantity and duration of the alternative medication.
  11. Enter other medication information as applicable.
  12. To prescribe the medication, select Accept.
  13. Select Send.
    The Send Prescription window opens with the pharmacy for the alternative medication in the Destination field.
  14. Select Send.
