Prescribe Replacement Medications When Renewals Are Denied

When the provider receives a refill denial in the inbox, the provider must resolve the Deny New to Follow DNTF task by prescribing a replacement medication in the Medications module. The replacement medication must be sent back to the pharmacy that initially sent the renewal request.
  1. In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, search for and select a patient from Patient Lookup window.
  2. Open Medications module, and select Prescribe New.
  3. Search for and select a replacement medication.
  4. Select and enter the following information:
    • Quantity
    • Duration
    • Refills
    • Problem
    • Dispense As Written
  5. Enter a note about the replaced medication in the Non-Clinical Notes to Pharmacy.
  6. Select Accept, and then select Send.
    The Send Prescription window opens.
  7. In the Send Prescription window, select the Resolved Denied Refills link.
The Deny New To Follow window opens.
  8. Select the medication, and then select Replace.
In the Send Prescription window Destination is updated with the name of the pharmacy that sent the initial renewal request and the Alerts section displays new messages.
  9. Select Send.
  10. Select Dispense History.
  11. In the Dispense Audit Information window, select Details.
The Refill Response Details window opens.
  12. In the Refill Response Details window, select the Misc tab.
When you select a medication, the Rx Reference Number of the denied refill is assigned to the new refill request. This reference number and the refill response details appear on the Misc tab.
When the medication is replaced, the DNTF task is marked as complete in the inbox, and a new encounter note is created in the Medications module to display the replacement details when the replacement prescription is successfully sent to the pharmacy.
