Prescribe a New Medication

You can prescribe a new medication to a patient from the Medication Search window. Note: NextGen® Enterprise EHR automatically checks a new prescribed medication against the patient’s other prescribed medications and displays an alert if a drug interaction exists. NextGen® Enterprise EHR displays an alert for inactive ingredients with the associated allergic reactions and the percentage of available formulation that contains the inactive ingredients. Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR. Open Medications module. Select Prescribe New. The Medication Search window opens. Search for a medication. Note: If you select a medication that is a duplicate of an active or a pending medication for the patient, or if you select a medication that has contraindications to an existing patient's diagnosis, NextGen® Enterprise EHR displays a warning message. Real-Time Prescription Benefit

The Medications module supports the Real-Time Prescription Benefit (RTPB) feature when you prescribe new medications. Note: The RTPB feature is supported only with Surescripts. The RTPB feature enables you to view the estimated cost of the prescribed medication for patients based on their specific formulary and benefit coverage. This feature also enables you to view the available alternative medications. You can select a cost-efficient alternative medication and replace the originally requested medication. Estimated Patient Cost The RTPB feature is available if the following conditions are met: The RTPB universal preference and user preference are enabled. Patient has Rx eligibility. Patient has an active pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) coverage. Patient's PBM participates in RTPB. Note: If the Medications module or the patient's pharmacy does not respond, the Benefit Information Unavailable. Retry? link appears. Enter Additional Medication Information

You can set up or add additional information for the medication after you have entered the required medication information. Enter required medication information. To select the unit in the Units list, do one of the following: Select a unit of measure from the list. Enter a unit of measure up to a maximum of 32 characters. If the medication is an oral liquid medication, the field automatically displays Milliliter and cannot be changed. Additional Medication Information If the Units field is left blank, the auto-population feature that is used for prescribing new medications is used for the renewal while renewing a medication. In the Comments filed, enter non-clinical comments to the pharmacist of up to a maximum of 250 characters. For ePrescribing, the maximum characters limit is 210 characters. Select Medication from the Report Filter Settings List. Report Filter Select to prompt the Medication Search window. Medication Search Select the type of search: DEA Class, Class or Name. Enter the search criteria. Select whether to include Generics and/or Retired medications. Clear the Active Medication check box if you wish to include all available medications. Select Search. Select the desired medications. Select OK. The medications display in Medication Search pane on the Medications window. Report Filter Select whether to Include or Exclude displayed medications. Select whether to display only the patients Who Have Never Had or Who Have Ever Had before or after a specific date or between a specific date range or Who Have Not Had Since a specific date. Complete the Prescription Details

When you prescribe medication for a patient, you can perform the following tasks on the RxDetails view. Calculate the quantity of medication needed based on the start date, stop date, and the Sig. The duration of the medication is calculated automatically. Calculate the stop date based on the quantity, start date, and the Sig. Note: If you select a medication from a medication favorite group, the fields on RxDetails are filled with the corresponding values defined for the group in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. If needed, you can edit the fields for your patient on the RxDetails view. Open NextGen® Mobile. Select a medication for the patient. The RxDetails view opens. To change the dosage, do the following: Select the medication name and dosage. The Select Medicine view displays the list of available dosages. Select the desired dosage. Prescribe Medication using Real-Time Prescription Benefit

In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, open the Medications module. Run the Rx Eligibility for the patient and then select Prescribe New. Search and select the medication using the formulary search option. The medication you selected appears under the Temporary status. Temporary Status Select the applicable pharmacy. Enter the medication quantity and day supply. The day supply value is calculated by dividing the prescribed quantity by the daily doses. The field supports up to three numeric values. Note: The estimated cost of the medication for the patient appears, and the Show Alternatives/Pricing Coverage link becomes available. Select Show Alternatives/ Pricing Coverage. The Alternatives/Pricing Coverage window opens which displays the alternative medication options. The window also displays the patient’s deductible and additional pricing coverage details.
