Printing Patient Prescriptions

You can print a prescription to hand over to the patient. The following apply: If you print or fax a controlled substance prescription, you can no longer ePrescribe the prescription. If you ePrescribe a controlled substance, you can print or fax the prescription. The printed or faxed report must indicate that the printed or faxed copy is "not for dispensing." If you ePrescribe a controlled substance and the transmission fails, you can print or fax the prescription. The printed or faxed report must display a message that states the prescription was originally sent electronically to a pharmacy. The pharmacy’s name, and the date and time of the eRx message must display. The message must also show that the eRx message failed. If the Verify PIN Universal Preference is set to True, you are required to provide Medication Verification when printing a patient prescription. Prescribe a New Medication

You can prescribe a new medication to a patient from the Medication Search window. Note: NextGen® Enterprise EHR automatically checks a new prescribed medication against the patient’s other prescribed medications and displays an alert if a drug interaction exists. NextGen® Enterprise EHR displays an alert for inactive ingredients with the associated allergic reactions and the percentage of available formulation that contains the inactive ingredients. Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR. Open Medications module. Select Prescribe New. The Medication Search window opens. Search for a medication. Note: If you select a medication that is a duplicate of an active or a pending medication for the patient, or if you select a medication that has contraindications to an existing patient's diagnosis, NextGen® Enterprise EHR displays a warning message. Formulary Search

NextGen® Enterprise EHR allows you to search for and prescribe medications using the formulary or non-formulary search. You can select to use the medication search window or the formulary search window. To use the formulary search window, you must have either Surescripts or InfoScan services enabled. Enabling the PDR BRIEF

When a prescriber prescribes a medication in the Medications module and if you enable the PDR ® (Physician's Desk Reference) BRIEF, it allows drug safety information from the PDR web service to display in the PDR BRIEF window, if applicable. You can enable and disable PDR BRIEF at both the practice and user levels. The settings must be enabled at both levels to allow the PDR BRIEF to display. Note: You can override the setting in the NextGen® Enterprise EHR user preferences. You must enable in NextGen® Communication Services PDR Product Listing Import in the Patient Saving and Education Category to view the PDR BRIEF. Test and Verify Barcodes

Print the sample report. Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR. Select a patient. Select or create an encounter. Select Medications on Top Toolbar. The Medications Module window opens. Medications Module Select Prescribe New to prescribe a medication. Select Add Note link. The Medication Note window opens. Medication Note Scan a barcode from your report. The result appears in the Medication Note window. Medication Note Verify that the result in the Medication Note window matches the barcode you scanned. The following security rights control aspects of Medications and ePrescribing. Security Right Used in Description Allow Access to Manage ePA NextGen® Enterprise EHR Enables users to manage electronic prior authorization (ePA) messages that come from the Pharmacy Benefits Manager (PBM), including answering questions sent by the PBM. For more information about ePA, go to NextGen Healthcare Success Community and download the latest Medications Module User Guide for NextGen® Enterprise EHR. Allow Pharmacy Download NextGen® Enterprise EHR Enables users to download pharmacies in NextGen® Enterprise. This security right does not control user ability to download pharmacies in File Maintenance. eRx NextGen® Enterprise EHR Enables users to approve and deny refills. This security right works in combination with the Medication permission (under MODULES > Medical Records). If the eRx permission and the Medication permission > Add access right are both enabled, approvals and denials can be applied.
