Submit Electronic Prescriptions of Controlled Substances

In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, open the Medications module. Select Prescribe New.The Medication Search window opens. Select a controlled substance to prescribe. On the medication details toolbar, select Send. Note: If the Prescribed Elsewhere checkbox is selected, the Print and Send buttons are unavailable. You must review the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) report that is generated automatically when you prescribe a controlled substance. The Send Prescription window displays the appropriate fields for the configured ePCS authentication method. Electronic Prescriptions

You can electronically submit a prescription directly to a selected pharmacy. The ePrescribing feature uses the Surescripts retail and mail-order networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator. You should remember the following points before submitting prescriptions electronically: Any medication you submit electronically must have a valid patient's Rx eligibility request, a valid SIG, a numeric quantity value, and a unit type. When resubmitting (including responding to refill requests) a medication previously prescribed without a valid unit type, you must update the unit type to a valid value. You can submit controlled substances electronically only if ePCS is set up. User-defined medications are not supported with Surescripts. You cannot send a medication that is not DEA Schedule 0 without the required setup. If you need supervision, you cannot send a prescription without selecting the appropriate supervising physician. Printing Patient Prescriptions

You can print a prescription to hand over to the patient. The following apply: If you print or fax a controlled substance prescription, you can no longer ePrescribe the prescription. If you ePrescribe a controlled substance, you can print or fax the prescription. The printed or faxed report must indicate that the printed or faxed copy is "not for dispensing." If you ePrescribe a controlled substance and the transmission fails, you can print or fax the prescription. The printed or faxed report must display a message that states the prescription was originally sent electronically to a pharmacy. The pharmacy’s name, and the date and time of the eRx message must display. The message must also show that the eRx message failed. If the Verify PIN Universal Preference is set to True, you are required to provide Medication Verification when printing a patient prescription. Configure Medication Verification

You can enable or disable medication verification. If you enable medication verification, you are prompted to enter your password when you fax, print, or ePrescribe a medication even if the medication is not a controlled substance. Medication Verification In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, from the Main menu, select Tools > Preferences.The Preferences window opens. Select the Medications tab. Do one of the following: To enable medication verification, select Use Medication Verification. To disable medication verification, clear Use Medication Verification.
