The message status lets everyone in the distribution list know that you are acting on the message.
An online profile works similar to an email distribution list. If an online profile is used, everyone listed in the online profile receives the responses. Patients can only respond to an online profile. They cannot initiate a message. When you receive a message sent to a distribution list, you can do the following:

Assign messages to yourself and act on them later. | Accept the messages. | The icon appears in the Completed column for all users in the routing policy. |
Assign a message to yourself and act on it immediately. | Accept and reply to the message. | The icon appears in the Completed column for all users in the routing policy. |
Assign a message to other users or user groups. | Reassign the Message to another routing policy. | The message is moved to the Archived folder and the message will appear as new in the inbox of the assigned users.

Release the ownership of a message that someone else accepted. | Release the message accepted by another user. | The icon appears in the Completed column for all users in the routing policy. You or another user must manually accept the message to take ownership. |
Release the ownership of a message you accepted. | Release the Message. | The icon appears in the Completed column for all users in the routing policy. Another user must manually accept the message to take ownership. |
Change the status of the message to Complete. | Mark the message as completed. | The icon appears in the Completed column for all users in the routing policy. |
Change the status of the message from Complete to incomplete. | Mark the message as incomplete. | The icon appears in the Completed column for all users in the routing policy. |
Send the message to another user without taking ownership of the message. | Forward the message without accepting it and add internal notes for other users in the distribution list. | The forwarded message is still available in the inbox of all users in the distribution list. The icon appears in the Read Status column. Other users can open the message and check the History section to find out whom the message has been forwarded to. |
