If you deactivate a patient, the patient remains registered in the practice. However, the patients' encounter information does not appear in the Practice Portal.
If you delete a patient, the patient's account is removed from the database and cannot be retrieved. To rejoin the practice, the patient must register as a new patient. To make it easier for a patient to rejoin the practice, it is better to deactivate rather than delete the patient.
