Get Started with Ophthalmology in NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine

The NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine for Ophthalmology include workflow for three areas of Ophthalmology: General, Retina, and Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC). Before you begin to use the Ophthalmology templates, setup and configuration must be performed. Note: Before using the newer framework-based Ophthalmology template set, content should be reviewed on the Framework Content system template. Template configuration settings specific to General Ophthalmology, Retina, and Ophthalmology ASC are made using the Eye Configuration practice template, and NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine practice level configurations are made using the Practice Configuration practice template. Clients should also review and update custom picklists using the Custom Picklists system template. This section covers the different work flows available for Ophthalmology, and additional setup considerations for Ophthalmology. Ophthalmology Ambulatory Surgical Center Setup

In this version of NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine, the Ophthalmology ASC templates remain the familiar 10-tab template set as in previous versions. Open this template set by selecting ASC Home – OPH listed in Template Launcher in the History toolbar or configured as a preferred medical records template in Preferences on the Template tab. To use the Ophthalmology ASC workflow, for billing purposes and to meet certain regulatory requirements that clinical records for an Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) be kept separate from a clinic, certain configuration prerequisites must be performed in File Maintenance. This includes setting up the ASC as a separate practice and configuring this Ambulatory Surgical Center as the rendering provider. When documenting an Ophthalmology ASC encounter, the ASC Center is selected as both the Practice and the Provider. Templates Used for Ophthalmology Configuration

The following templates are used for configuring settings and content for Ophthalmology. Template Description Eye Configuration This practice template is where you configure settings specific to the Ophthalmology specialty. Practice Configuration Practice-level template used for configuring practice preferences for the functioning of important features throughout the system by selecting from options currently available. You can set the pronoun to be used in concatenation for the HPI and enable gender related details to appear in the chart note. Ophthalmology Content for the Framework Template Set

One of the biggest benefits of the Framework-based tabbed workflow is being able to configure content and navigation using the Framework Content system template. When you are on the main specialty Home Page or Intake template, selecting a specialty and a visit type causes the navigation and content configured on the Framework Content system template to load the configured template set. The Framework Content system template enables clients to easily set up navigation at the specialty level, the practice level, and the provider level using the fields at the top of the template. Note: The recommended best practice is to use the configuration setup functionality at the Framework Content system template at the specialty level as often as possible. It is recommended that clients avoid or limit the use of provider-based configuration setups due to the difficulty in maintaining the large numbers of configuration setups that can result when using provider-based setups. System and Practice Templates Used for Ophthalmology Configuration

System and practice templates allow clients to configure different functions and features of the NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine to meet their own preferences without having to make customizations to templates using Template Editor. The following templates are used for configurations by all specialties: Field Description Framework Content System-level template used for configuring content and navigation on the Framework Template Set and specialty template sets based on the Framework templates.
