Ophthalmology Setup for Documenting Encounters

Before the NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine for Ophthalmology can be used in a clinical setting with patients, individuals responsible for setting up and maintaining the system have to review and configure specialty-specific functionalities and content for Ophthalmology. Since Ophthalmology templates compromise of three different template sets , it is important to know which Home template to use and how to open it. For clients using the Ophthalmology Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) templates, there are additional steps for setting up a practice as an Ambulatory Surgical Center. Note: This version of NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine includes both the newer framework-based tabbed Ophthalmology templates and the templates for the 10-tab workflow used in previous versions of NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine, which have been revised to meet Meaningful Use requirements. Ophthalmology Ambulatory Surgical Center Setup

In this version of NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine, the Ophthalmology ASC templates remain the familiar 10-tab template set as in previous versions. Open this template set by selecting ASC Home – OPH listed in Template Launcher in the History toolbar or configured as a preferred medical records template in Preferences on the Template tab. To use the Ophthalmology ASC workflow, for billing purposes and to meet certain regulatory requirements that clinical records for an Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) be kept separate from a clinic, certain configuration prerequisites must be performed in File Maintenance. This includes setting up the ASC as a separate practice and configuring this Ambulatory Surgical Center as the rendering provider. When documenting an Ophthalmology ASC encounter, the ASC Center is selected as both the Practice and the Provider. Ophthalmology Home Templates

Ophthalmology Home Templates Ophthalmology Home Templates Ophthalmology has three Home templates to choose as a starting point for documenting an encounter. For General and Retina Ophthalmology, there are two choices: Home Page – OPH template (oph_home_page) which uses the newer framework-based tabbed encounter workflow (This is the preferred workflow.) Home – OPH template (eyemaster_im) which uses the original 10–tab encounter workflow If the Retina provider has not been designated as such in the Eye Configuration practice template, or if a generalist wants to use the Retina workflow for a particular patient, then the Use retina workflow for this encounter check box should be selected when using 10-tab workflow. Note: In this version of NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine, the Home – OPH template (eyemaster_im) and the original 10–tab encounter workflow can still be used, but this is not the preferred workflow. Joint Commission Standards Configuration and Ophthalmology

The Joint Commission Standards (formerly known as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations or JCAHO) configuration setting for all NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine templates is found on the Practice Configuration practice template. This setting should be selected by those practices that are required to adhere to The Joint Commission Standards. When the Enable The Joint Commission Standards check box is selected, all additional fields and links related to The Joint Commission related content found within NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine is enabled. Occasionally, this may affect encounter documentation workflow. Enabling the Joint Commission requirement gives a hard stop to workflow, such that allergies must be documented/updated before anything else is done. Ophthalmic Suite Setup Templates

The NextGen® Ophthalmic Suite template set requires setup before use. Some of these configurations are required, and others are optional. You can find configurations specific to the NextGen® Ophthalmic Suite template sets on the Eye Configuration practice template. You can configure practice configurations for NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine on the Practice Configuration practice template. You can use the Framework Content system template to configure content on the Ophthalmology and Optometry templates. Review and update the content before using the template set to document patient encounters.
