Get Started with Ophthalmology in NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine

The NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine for Ophthalmology include workflow for three areas of Ophthalmology: General, Retina, and Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC). Before you begin to use the Ophthalmology templates, setup and configuration must be performed. Note: Before using the newer framework-based Ophthalmology template set, content should be reviewed on the Framework Content system template. Template configuration settings specific to General Ophthalmology, Retina, and Ophthalmology ASC are made using the Eye Configuration practice template, and NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine practice level configurations are made using the Practice Configuration practice template. Clients should also review and update custom picklists using the Custom Picklists system template. This section covers the different work flows available for Ophthalmology, and additional setup considerations for Ophthalmology. Ophthalmology Setup for Documenting Encounters

Before the NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine for Ophthalmology can be used in a clinical setting with patients, individuals responsible for setting up and maintaining the system have to review and configure specialty-specific functionalities and content for Ophthalmology. Since Ophthalmology templates compromise of three different template sets , it is important to know which Home template to use and how to open it. For clients using the Ophthalmology Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) templates, there are additional steps for setting up a practice as an Ambulatory Surgical Center. Note: This version of NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine includes both the newer framework-based tabbed Ophthalmology templates and the templates for the 10-tab workflow used in previous versions of NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine, which have been revised to meet Meaningful Use requirements. Setup for Ophthalmology ASC in File Maintenance

For ASC billing, billing is separated into a facility fee and a professional fee. The facility fee is billed through the ASC, which is set up both as a practice and as a provider. The professional fee for the surgery/procedure is billed through the clinical practice of the surgeon/provider. The facility (ASC) is set up and selected as the practice and the rendering provider, while the provider performing the surgery is selected as the referring provider. Configuring the ASC as both a practice and a rendering provider is done in File Maintenance. CAUTION: It recommended that practices consult their legal advisers, and state and other regulators for setup guidance to determine whether a separate practice should be set up for the ASC or if the ASC can be included as an additional location within the provider practice. Billing for an Ambulatory Surgical Center

Billing for ASC facility charges should be set up so that: The ASC facility charges are billed as the Rendering Physician. The physician (surgeon) charges are billed as the Referring Physician. This is generally configured within NextGen® Enterprise PM and displays automatically on the ASC Ophthalmology Coding template, which is used to submit charges. Ophthalmology Home Templates and Tabbed Template Sets

For Ophthalmology there are three Home templates available to users: ASC Home – OPH (eyeasc_homescreen) for Ophthalmology Ambulatory Surgical Center Home Page – OPH (oph_home_page) - starting point for current, preferred workflow for Office encounters Home – OPH (eyemaster_im) - starting point for older 10-tab workflow Each of these home templates function as a starting point for documenting an encounter for each of the sub-specialties that are currently included within the Ophthalmology NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine. It is important to understand how to choose which of these templates to use and when. Note that the display name is shown first, with the Template Editor name shown within parentheses.
