Electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances

You can electronically submit a prescription for Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) controlled substances (CS) by using electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances (ePCS). ePCS uses the Surescripts retail networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator. When you search for medications in NextGen® Mobile, the CS medications appear in red along with the DEA class codes; C1, C2, C3, C4, and C5. To control user rights for electronic prescriptions, System Administrator follows the DEA regulations to restrict eRx access rights in applications and practices. These measures rely on identity-proofing to prevent fraud. To comply with the DEA regulations, NextGen® Mobile providers can use any of the following ePCS authentication methods. Verifying ePrescribing Eligibility for a Patient

In NextGen® Mobile, you can verify the medication eligibility status of a patient when you are prescribing medications. For properly configured NextGen Healthcare clinics, the patient’s medication formulary eligibility status appears in Rx Eligibility on the Patient Chart view. If Rx Eligibility status appears as No eligibility status, you can select No eligibility status to check the eligibility status. NextGen® Mobile submits the medication status request to Surescripts, RxHub, or other available formulary services, and displays the eligibility results with one of the following statuses. Single - The patient has single eligibility enabling you to search only the formulary that the patient has eligibility for. The medication search field displays the Surescripts benefit source with a plan. You can select the field to search medications based on that plan. Renew Medications

In NextGen® Mobile, you can renew medications in the Patient Chart view. When renewing a medication, if your encounter is not the latest one, a message appears prompting you to associate the medication to the encounter existing for the current date. If an encounter does not exist for the current date, a message appears prompting you to create an encounter for the current date and associate the medication to the new encounter. Note: You can renew a Controlled Substances (CS) medication only if you have set up the necessary ePCS permissions. If you have the ePCS permissions but the provider relationship is not set as self in System Administrator, you can renew and save the CS medication but cannot send that medication for prescription. Authenticate Medication using IdenTrust MAS

Before you begin You must ensure the following: The ePCS authentication method is set up in universal and user preferences in System Administrator. EPCS Authentication Method for ePrescribing must be set as IdenTrust. Note: User preference takes precedence over universal preference. The Identrust Mobile Authentication Service (MAS) application is installed on your device. You can use IdenTrust MAS authentication method to perform authentication while prescribing Controlled Substances (CS) medication. In NextGen® Mobile, open the RxVerification view for a CS medication. RxVerification view To authenticate your CS prescription, select Verify in the IdenTrust section. Authenticate Medication using Symantec VIP Token

Before you begin You must ensure the following: The ePCS authentication method is set up in universal and user preferences in System Administrator. You can use Symantec VIP token authentication method to perform authentication while prescribing controlled substances (CS) medication. In NextGen® Mobile, open the RxVerification view for a CS medication. Rx Verification view To authenticate your CS prescription, enter your password in the NextGen section. Send Prescription to a Pharmacy

When adding, refilling, or renewing a medication, you are prompted to provide pharmacy information for the patient. If the patient has one or more default pharmacies defined, you can select a pharmacy from the list of available pharmacies. If the patient does not have a default pharmacy or needs to have the prescription sent to a different pharmacy, you can perform a pharmacy search. Open NextGen® Mobile. Select a medication for the patient. The RxDetails view opens. Fill the required fields, and select Save. If the DUR Alert view opens, select Reason to select a reason to allow the medication, and select Allow.
