Electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances
You can electronically submit a prescription for Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) controlled substances (CS) by using electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances (ePCS). ePCS uses the Surescripts retail networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator.
When you search for medications in NextGen® Mobile, the CS medications appear in red along with the DEA class codes; C1, C2, C3, C4, and C5.
To control user rights for electronic prescriptions, System Administrator follows the DEA regulations to restrict eRx access rights in applications and practices. These measures rely on identity-proofing to prevent fraud.
To comply with the DEA regulations, NextGen® Mobile providers can use any of the following ePCS authentication methods.
- Symantec™ VIP Token
- IdenTrust Mobile Authentication Service (MAS)
For more information on setting up the authentication, go to NextGen Healthcare Success Community, and download the latest ePrescribing User Guide forNextGen®Enterprise EHR.
To prescribe CS medications, you must ensure that the provider ID in NextGen® Mobile Set Defaults settings, NextGen® Mobile Cloud Portal, and Admin Console are same.
NextGen® Mobile validates the ePCS setup for a provider to access ePCS functionality. The ePCS setup process involves the necessary configurations in File Maintenance and System Administrator.
