Electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances

You can electronically submit a prescription for Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) controlled substances (CS) by using electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances (ePCS). ePCS uses the Surescripts retail networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator. When you search for medications in NextGen® Mobile, the CS medications appear in red along with the DEA class codes; C1, C2, C3, C4, and C5. To control user rights for electronic prescriptions, System Administrator follows the DEA regulations to restrict eRx access rights in applications and practices. These measures rely on identity-proofing to prevent fraud. To comply with the DEA regulations, NextGen® Mobile providers can use any of the following ePCS authentication methods. Viewing Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) Report

As a regulatory requirement, states can mandate that you view a patient’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) report before prescribing Controlled Substances (CS) medications such as narcotics, sedatives, stimulants, and drugs of concern. With PDMP, you can receive a detailed list of a patient’s controlled substance history and NarxCare scores at the point of care. The PDMP integrated functionality, using Bamboo Health PDMP Gateway, can help eliminate fraud, risk, and crime while ensuring compliance and increasing patient safety. For this service, you, as a client, must contract directly with Bamboo Health for a nominal annual provider fee. Some states cover this fee for their prescribers. In NextGen® Mobile, providers with proper permissions can now view the PDMP reports using a hyperlink that appears on the Rx Details, Refill Request, and Renew Medication views for CS medications. Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Setup

The Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) setup involves the following procedures: In File Maintenance: Enable PDMP Gateway. or Enable State PDMP. Note: The Enable State PDMP option enables non-Bamboo Health users to document that they have checked the state's PDMP website outside of NextGen® Enterprise EHR. If necessary, specify whether PDMP report review is required. Select the PDMP Gateway role. In System Administrator: Set up user and provider relationship to Self. If necessary, set up PDMP reports to automatically generate. Verify the PDMP Production API URL. Grant PDMP report security rights to user groups. Note: If you have firewall or proxy restrictions, you should grant access to the URL pdmp.nextgen.com on workstations where you are using NextGen® Enterprise EHR. ePrescribing Setup

Before you begin Before you use the NextGen® Enterprise EHR ePrescribing feature, the following ePrescribing setup procedures must be completed: Install NextGen® Communication Services (NCS). Enable Surescripts functionality in NCS. Note: Before you attempt to set up ePrescribing, you must contact NextGen Healthcare Support to install and configure NCS. Download the Surescripts pharmacies. Map unmatched pharmacies and add unmatched pharmacies as new. Check the pharmacy service level. Enroll the providers in the Surescripts network. Set up eRx permissions for the providers. Set up ePCS (Electronic Prescriptions of Controlled Substances) for authorized providers. Set up tabs and categories for eRx refills and eRx errors in the Workflow module's task list. Set up workgroups for eRx refills and eRx errors in the Workflow module. Enable a Provider to Send ePCS

In File Maintenance, select Master Files > Providers > ePrescribing tab. Make sure the following fields are completed on the tabs listed. They are required for the ePCS service level: EHR tab: Practice Name Demographics tab: First Name, Last Name, Street, City, State, Zip, Phone, Fax, E-mail Address Practice tab: DEA Number (must be a valid DEA number or blank) System tab: National Provider ID Note: The address fields cannot contain a PO Box. In the Retail Service Level section, make sure the New Rx and Refill Request check boxes are selected, and then select the ePCS check box. ePCS Service Level for Pharmacies and Providers

To send controlled substances to electronic prescribing networks, both the provider and the pharmacy must meet the criteria set by Surescripts and the DEA. The pharmacies are set up outside of the NextGen applications and downloaded into File Maintenance. You must set up the providers to meet the criteria. To check whether a pharmacy supports ePCS: In File Maintenance, select Master Files > Pharmacies. In the Retail Service Level section, the ePCS check box is selected if the pharmacy supports ePCS.
