RxChange Messages

An Rx Change message is initiated by pharmacies by the Surescripts® network. The pharmacy electronically sends the message to the original prescriber when the pharmacy identifies a need to change the medication that was initially prescribed. The message allows for the electronic interchange and communication between the pharmacist and the prescriber to help ensure the patient gets the most appropriate medication for the diagnosis. Some examples of when the pharmacy could request an RxChange are when there is a DUR concern, formulary coverage has changed, a generic option is available, or a prior authorization is required for the prescribed medication. In some cases, the pharmacy provides the medication alternatives as part of the RxChange message. The prescriber can prescribe another medication when the pharmacy is out of stock of my patients prescription or can provide any missing provider information needed for the patients prescription. The prescriber has the ability to review the change request and respond with an approval, approval with changes, or denial.
