Electronic Prescribing (eRx) Refill Requests

When you electronically submit patient medication prescriptions to a pharmacy, you may receive a refill request from that pharmacy. These refill requests are unsolicited and until you respond to a request, you have no other interaction with the pharmacy that requested the refill. Each refill request creates a task in the Workflow module and the Manage Refills window in the Medications module. NextGen® Enterprise EHR evaluates the status of the medication in the patient's chart. If the request can be matched to an existing patient, the information appears with the option to approve or deny the request. Prescription Fill (RxFill) Status Notifications

To improve your assessment of a patient’s medication adherence, you can review notifications about a patient’s prescription fill status. You cannot respond to these notifications. The RxFill notifications that NextGen® Enterprise EHR receives from pharmacies can help you identify when a patient’s prescription has been fully dispensed, partially dispensed, or not dispensed. Note: Prescribers should anticipate that RxFill messages will only be received for a portion of the prescriptions the physician writes. If no RxFill message is received for a prescription, the system cannot assume that the prescription has not been dispensed or that the patient is not compliant. Before you begin The provider enrolls to the Rx Fill and Rx Fill Indicator Change Retail Service Level in File Maintenance indicating that the provider has agreed to receive RxFill notifications. The provider should add RxFill Status to their display Grid Preferences to see RxFill statuses in the Medication module. Note: RxFill notifications should be disabled for inactive medications. If the RxFill notification has not been received, then the RxFill Status is blank instead of showing No Status. Before you begin The provider enrolls to the RxFill and RxFill Indicator Change Retail Service Level in File Maintenance. The pharmacy sending the RxFill notifications enrolls to the Rx Fill and Rx Fill Indicator Change Retail Service Level in File Maintenance. The latest version of NextGen® Communication Services supporting RxFill is installed. The provider's high level workflow to send RxFill Indicator change XML messages to the pharmacy is discussed in this section. The provider can change the existing type of RxFill notifications received from the pharmacy. RxFill Indicator change XML message for a medication is sent to the pharmacy. Open the Medication module. Receive Rx Fill Notification Messages

The administrator and the user setup is required to receive Rx Fill notification messages. The administrator should do the following: Enroll the provider for Rx Fill and Rx Fill Indicator Change Retail Service Level in File Maintenance. Enroll the Surescripts provider for Rx Fill. Verify that the retail pharmacy participates in Rx Fill transaction. To update pharmacy records, perform a pharmacy download. Make sure NextGen® Communication Services(NCS) is running. You do not need to make changes to the processes. Each user that wants to see the Rx Fill notifications in the Medications Module must add the RxFill Status column in the Medications module > Grid Preferences.
