Launch Patient Education Topics from a Template

Before you begin

You must have your own provider license to use the Healthwise Patient Education Module. To obtain a license, contact your NextGen Sales Representative or NextGen Client Support.

You can display a preselected or context-sensitive patient education topic depending on the Patient Education trigger setup. Context sensitivity is based on the CPT or ICD-9 code, terms, or title and language selected during the encounter. To display a patient education topic related to a particular CPT or ICD-9 code, a procedure or diagnosis must be saved to the encounter.

After you display a patient education topic, you can save it to the encounter. The topic remains viewable when the encounter is locked.

  1. Ask your system administrator which NextGen® Enterprise EHR template and field(s) to use to launch the patient education topic.
  2. Select the template that contains the Patient Education trigger, and then select OK.

  3. Execute the trigger from the applicable field.
  4. To launch a context-sensitive patient education topic, do the following:
    1. Enter the search type in the following applicable fields:
      • CPT code
      • ICD code
      • Terms
      • Title
    2. Enter the search value that corresponds to the search type in the applicable field.
      For example, if the type is CPT code, enter the code.
    3. If the template contains a data sheet with procedure or diagnosis information, select the row with the applicable CPT or ICD code to automatically fill in the search type and value.
  5. Execute the Patient Education trigger on the applicable field.
    For example, select a button to launch the patient education topic.
    The topic appears in the Document Viewer.
  6. To quickly change the language for the displayed topic, select the Spanish and English links.
    1. If you have selected a language other than English, select the Return to English Index link to display an alphabetical list of patient instructions by category.
  7. Select the topic you want to display it in the Document Viewer.
  8. To save the topic to the selected patient encounter, select Save.
    The Save File As window opens.

    If necessary, you can change the file name, and then select Save.

  9. To print the topic, access the Healthwise Knowledgebase for more information, or search for other topics, use the Patient Education toolbar.
