This procedure provides the basic steps to create a lab order. When you create an order, you must complete all required fields that have been set up as Mandatory Data Points in File Maintenance Practice Preferences. These required fields appear in red text. If you do not fill in a required field, when you try to save your information, a message appears, prompting you to complete the field. For more information on setting up Mandatory Data Point fields in File Maintenance Practice Preferences, go to NextGen Healthcare Success Community, and download the latest Orders Module Setup Guide for NextGen® Enterprise EHR . Open the Orders module. Select the Orders Summary tab. On the Top toolbar, select New > Lab Order If an encounter with today's date exists, the Create New Lab Order window opens. If an encounter with today's date does not exist, a message appears, prompting you to create an encounter or use a selected encounter. There are a several check boxes to set preferences for printing, the use of the NextGen Compendium, and other settings. Field Description Print Requisition when Lab Order is saved This preference can be selected to automatically trigger the printing of lab orders when they are saved. If this preference is turned ON, NextGen® Enterprise prints a copy of the current order when the Save button is selected on the new order page. To meet the regulatory CMS mandate for Clinical Decision Support (CDS) when ordering radiology advanced imaging tests (such as CTs, MRIs, and PET scans), practices can set up and use Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC). After setting up the AUC in File Maintenance, providers or other clinical staff can order Advanced Imaging tests and receive appropriate use feedback for a patient’s medical condition before placing radiology orders from the Orders module. This process occurs immediately after the user selects the advanced imaging test on the Create New Radiology Order window. The Orders module allows you to create both lab and radiology test order favorites in File Maintenance. Select File Maintenance > Master Files > System > Order Test Favorites. Select New. The Add Order Test Favorites or Modify Order Test Favorites window opens. Select the test entity System or select the NextGen Compendium Favorite. Select whether the Order Type is lab or radiology. Give the Test Favorites group a name by entering text in the Description field. Select the Folder icon. Use the Available orders test list to select which tests need to be added to this lab test favorites set. After the test is selected, select the arrow to move them into the Included list for this test favorites group. After all tests in your favorites group have been selected, select OK to close the selection window. Select OK to save the new Test Favorites group. Note: If you try and create a test favorites group with the same name as an existing group, it issues a message and does not allow you to saveOrder Test Favorites

The Orders Module supports both standard lab tests (blood work, urinalysis, etc.) and radiology tests (x-rays, MRIs, etc.). These tests must be selected and defined for your practice. You can use the tests in the NextGen® compendium; you can use the tests from your testing entities (such as Labcorp); or, you can define your own set of tests. Before setting up the NextGen Compendium or Orders Tests, to ensure the most recent compendiums are loaded, your system administrator must run the Order Management Console. The test settings, questions and other definitions for the Orders Module are set up using File Maintenance. The master files store all data needed by the Orders Module, and they must also be properly set up before you can use the Orders Module. You should define these Orders master files first: Order Tests, Order Components, Order Test Favorites, Order AOE Questions and Order AOE Answers.
