Associating Orders with Patient Encounters
Test orders must be associated with an encounter. When an order is created, the system looks for an encounter for today's date to attach the order to.
If you create a lab or radiology order using the New option in the Orders Summary tab, and an encounter with today's date exists, the order is created. If a current date encounter does not exist, you are prompted to either create a patient encounter for today, use the selected encounter, or select a different encounter.
If you choose to use a selected encounter, you can do the following
- If the selected encounter is not from today, you can use the current active encounter, or create an encounter.
- If the selected encounter is locked, you are required to either cancel the order or create an encounter. Test orders associated with locked encounters can only be opened for viewing.
- If the selected encounter is locked and you try to delete an associated test order, a message appears, stating that you cannot delete the order.
- If the selected encounter is from a different practice, you are required to either cancel the order or create an encounter.
For a patient order generated from a NextGen Care Population Management Hub bulk order, the order is associated with a same-day, unlocked clinical encounter for a given patient, if available, or a new patient encounter is created.
