Add a Referral
You can select the Medications or Immunizations links at any time during the encounter to access the associated module.
You can use the Referrals Order template to add a referral.
Select any of the informational buttons to learn more about the Referrals Order template.
- Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR.
- On the Referrals Order template, in the Insurance name field, select to select from the patient's available options.
- Enter the insurance policy number in the Policy # field.
- In the To section, select Specialty/specialist name/site.
- To select a value from the list, select the Specialty field.
The Provider name field fills based on the set default referral provider recipient.The Preferred Provider Picklist window opens if there are multiple referral providers (individual providers and practices) that are configured to the specialty via File Maintenance.Note: When you select a specialty and a referral provider (recipient) is set as default to that specialty; then the provider field auto-populates with the details of the default referral provider (recipient). It could be a practice or a provider.
Configuration must be done in File Maintenance for specialty specific referral provider (recipient) mapping. If NextGen® Share is installed, then the configuration in File Maintenance is required for the provider field to be filled.
- Select the Location field to do one of the following:
- Select a value from the list.
- Select the top blank row to enter a location in the field.
- To indicate if authorization is required, select No or Yes.
- In the Diagnosis section:
- Select the Description field.
- If an assessment has not been documented for the patient encounter, select Add Assessment or Add Common assessment, and then select the Diagnosis field to enter it for the referral.
- Continue as needed in the three other available description fields.
- In the Services requested section, select the appropriate type of service.
- In the Clinical Indications section, document details in the Reason for Referral, time limit and Timeframe fields.
- To text further directions, select the Instructions Detail link.
- Select Add.
If tasking is configured, the Select Task Recipients template opens. Data entered through these steps fills in the Referrals ordered this encounter grid at the bottom of the template.
In the Referrals ordered section, you can select Incomplete or Completed to filter the grid accordingly.
- To return to the previous template with an entry for the new referral in the Referral History grid, select Close.
