Install a Virtual Mirth® Appliance by NextGen Healthcare

To install a virtual Mirth® Appliance by NextGen Healthcare, you must obtain it from Mirth® Support and then deploy it on a VMware ESXi™ server.

  1. Contact Mirth® support to obtain the following:
    • Directions for using the Mirth® SFTP server.
    • Appliance serial number.
The information arrives in an email.
  2. Follow the directions in the email to log on to the Mirth® SFTP server and download your virtual Mirth® Appliance by NextGen Healthcare image from the outgoing directory.
The virtual Mirth® Appliance by NextGen Healthcare is distributed as an Open Virtual Appliance (OVA) file.
  3. Copy the Mirth® Appliance by NextGen Healthcare OVA file to your VMware ESXi™ server.
  4. Load the Mirth® Appliance by NextGen Healthcare OVA file into the VMware tool:
    • If you use the VMware ESXi™ hypervisor, import the image by selecting File > Deploy OVF Template, and then follow the wizard.
    • For other VMware products, use the VMware OVF Tool utility to convert the Mirth® Appliance by NextGen Healthcare OVA file to the required format. Access VMware OVF Tool at https://developer.vmware.com/web/tool/4.5.0/ovf-tool.
  5. Set the CPUs, memory, and disk space as recommended at Recommended Resources for a Virtual Mirth Appliance by NextGen Healthcare.

When you configure the memory for the virtual machine (VM), select the Unlimited option under Resources. Some VMware versions are affected by a bug that clears this option, resulting in seriously degraded VM performance. (For details, see https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1027012. To use this link, you must be enrolled in VMware Workspace One.)

  6. Turn on the VM, and then select the Console tab.
The appliance begins to run within one or two minutes.
  7. When you see the Linux® logon window, enter the logon name as console and password as console.
  8. Select Set Appliance Serial Number, and then enter the Mirth® Appliance by NextGen Healthcare serial number that was provided in the support email.
Each serial number can be used for only one Mirth® Appliance by NextGen Healthcare.
  9. If your network does not provide DHCP addresses, set an IP address manually by selecting Change IP Address, and then follow the prompts.
  10. Select Exit.
The Linux logon window appears, and IP addresses are displayed for Ethernet devices.
  11. Take note of the eth0 IP address for the next step.
  12. In a web browser, go to https://<IP address>.
The Mirth® Appliance by NextGen Healthcare Control Panel opens.
  13. Log on by using the default username and password, which are both admin.
  14. Change the logon credentials by selecting System > Users > admin, and then provide a new password.
  15. If the appliance grows and you need more than 100 GB of disk space, contact the Mirth® help desk for assistance.
