Electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances

You can electronically submit a prescription for Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) controlled substances (CS) by using electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances (ePCS). ePCS uses the Surescripts retail networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator. When you search for medications in NextGen® Mobile, the CS medications appear in red along with the DEA class codes; C1, C2, C3, C4, and C5. To control user rights for electronic prescriptions, System Administrator follows the DEA regulations to restrict eRx access rights in applications and practices. These measures rely on identity-proofing to prevent fraud. To comply with the DEA regulations, NextGen® Mobile providers can use any of the following ePCS authentication methods. Electronic Prior Authorization Setup

After you enable Electronic Prior Authorization (ePA) across the enterprise, you can control which users use it. ePA setup involves the following procedures: Enable ePA for the enterprise . Grant users permission to initiate and manage the ePA process. If necessary, modify the ePA Import processor in NextGen Communication Services. If you want the user to receive tasks in the Inbox when an ePA status update indicates user action is required, then in File Maintenance, select Providers master file then go to ePrescribing tab, assign a workgroup and the ePA category to the provider for the ePA Task Type. Note: When the ePA Task Type has a workgroup and the ePA task category selected, in the Provider Check window, the Workflow and Categories section displays the ePA Group and ePA Category fields. Prerequisites for ePrescribing in NextGen® Mobile

For electronic prescription of controlled substances (ePCS) medications in NextGen® Mobile, you must set up the following: You must have NextGen® Enterprise API (application programming interface) licenses. Configure Medication Verification

You can enable or disable medication verification. If you enable medication verification, you are prompted to enter your password when you fax, print, or ePrescribe a medication even if the medication is not a controlled substance. Medication Verification In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, from the Main menu, select Tools > Preferences. The Preferences window opens. Select the Medications tab. Do one of the following: To enable medication verification, select Use Medication Verification. To disable medication verification, clear Use Medication Verification.
