Patient Modes

The following types of patient modes are available:

One patient mode enable patients to fill out a particular template (see Turn on Patient Mode for Template Entry) with no access to the remaining functionality. This patient mode provides a full-screen template view similar to Full Screen mode, but locks down the application.

The other two patient modes are part of an optional feature that NextGen® Enterprise EHR offers to comply with the specific guidelines provided by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT). Edit and Review modes enable you to handle patient charts in a more efficient way and create a more secure and easily sustainable environment for patients' medical data. This feature is enabled by the Enable CCHIT check box on the NextGen System Info window in the System Administrator application. For more information, go to NextGen Healthcare Success Community, and download the System Administrator Guide for NextGen Enterprise.

The Edit and Review modes provide the following functionality:

  • Review mode: Multiple users can select a patient and access that patient's chart. All patient data is displayed in read-only mode.
  • Edit mode: Only one user at a time can enter new patient information or change the existing information. All other users can only view the patient's information. If you attempt to add or edit patient information while another user has the same patient selected in the Edit mode, you are notified by a warning message that another user is editing the patient you have selected.

Once the Edit or Review patient modes are enabled in your environment, the Edit Mode item is added under the View menu. An Edit button is added to the NextGen® Enterprise EHR Top toolbar and is automatically selected. The Title bar displays the mode that you have the selected patient open in.

All of the patients selected are automatically opened in Edit mode, enabling you to add or modify patient information. When you are done, select the Edit button to clear the selection, or log off NextGen® Enterprise EHR to enable other users access to the selected patient's information. The Title bar automatically reflects the mode change.

When working in the Review mode, the changes to the patient information that are made by another user working in the Edit mode are not displayed unless you select Refresh on the Encounter History tab or close and then select the patient again.
