External Patient Education

External Patient Education refers to educational resources that are available while connecting to a code (such as ICD-9, ICD-10, or CPT) or a description (such as RxNorm) to an external resource accessible through a URL that is set up in File Maintenance. When you right-click a code or term, the HL7 InfoButton accesses a URL to an external resource and launches the website in a web browser. Note: NextGen Healthcare recommends that you use the External Patient Education link to access resources that are useful to your patients' recovery and care, such as health behaviors, preventative education, and instruction about behaviors and activities that can assist in patients understanding about their care. Websites with InfoButton-compliant functionality may require subscriptions. Vendors (companies that provide patient education) are not required to adhere to the HL7 standards. Clinical Decision Support

Clinical Decision Support refers to the external resources that provide evidence-based decision support interventions. These external resources enable you to select one or more electronic clinical decision support interventions based on each and at least one combination of the following: Problem list Medication list Medication allergy list Demographics Laboratory tests and values/results Vital signs In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, clinical decision support electronically identifies diagnostic and therapeutic reference information for the user. The HL7 InfoButton link set up in File Maintenance activates the Clinical Decision Support URL to connect you to context-sensitive information based on the active NextGen® Enterprise EHR module. Note: NextGen Healthcare recommends that the URLs associated with Clinical Decision Support access sites or vendors that provide you with additional information, such as suggested care plans and recommendations based on the patient's results or diagnoses. View and Print Medication Education

A majority of medications in the NextGen® Enterprise EHR database have corresponding educational information associated with them in the form of a drug monograph. When you prescribe a medication, you can view and print the monograph to provide the educational information to the patient. Note: The viewing and printing of a drug monograph is audited. Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR. Open the Medications module and access a patient with medication information. Do one of the following: Right-click a medication and select Resources > Monograph. Select Resources > Monograph from the Medications toolbar. From the Medication Search window, right-click a medication and select Resources > Monograph. The Medication Monograph window displays information regarding the selected medication. To adjust the size of the Medication Monograph, select a percentage from the Zoom list. External Provider Reference

The External Provider Reference is an additional external reference you can set up for your personal use. This reference can be any website that you want to refer for additional information. The External Provider Reference is not connected to the HL7 InfoButton, therefore context-sensitive information must be manually mapped to your templates. You can set up the External Provider Reference URL either at the practice level or at the user level. The URL set up at the user level overrides the practice-level preference. Meaningful Use Compliance

Stage 2 Meaningful Use (MU2) requires that providers should have access to additional information on diagnoses, medications, procedures, allergies, lab tests, values and results, demographics, and vital signs. To comply with this requirement, information is available in NextGen® Enterprise EHR with the HL7 context-aware knowledge retrieval InfoButton. The InfoButton, accessible in NextGen® Enterprise EHR through External Patient Education and Clinical Decision Support, provides access to external references for context-sensitive information from various NextGen® Enterprise EHR modules. These external educational references are available together with provider-specific External Provider Reference, Healthwise® Patient Education material, and the Drug Monograph used by the Medications module.
