Identifying Persons and Patients

NextGen® Enterprise EHR and NextGen® Enterprise PM store information for both patients and non-patients.

All persons and patients have a demographics record that includes non-clinical information, such as name, date of birth, address, and phone number. Additionally, all patients have a chart that includes clinical and financial information related to their encounters in the practice.

When you open NextGen® Enterprise EHR or NextGen® Enterprise PM, the following visual indicators help you to easily identify and distinguish a person from a patient.
  • A chart icon denotes a patient in the practice. When you perform a person or patient lookup by selecting a patient from the search results, the patient's chart opens.
  • A globe icon denotes a person who is not a patient in the practice. When you perform a person lookup by selecting a person from the search results, the Modify Person Information window opens.
A person can be an individual having any of the following statuses:
  • A new patient who has not yet been checked in for the first appointment
  • A guarantor for a patient in the practice
  • An insurance policy holder for a patient in the practice
  • An emergency contact for a patient in the practice
  • A patient in another practice within the same enterprise
