NextGen® Enterprise EHR Practice Preferences Options
The EHR tab in Practice Preferences window enables you to select the items that appear in NextGen® Enterprise EHR.
The following table describes the options for NextGen® Enterprise EHR Practices Preferences.

Use PM as EHR's scheduling source | If you have a license for NextGen® Enterprise PM, then the Workflow module in NextGen® Enterprise EHR uses NextGen® Enterprise PM as the default scheduling source and you cannot create appointments or modify appointment information (except room and status) in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. In the Appointments section of the Workflow module, all NextGen® Enterprise PM resources are available, and you can view all the NextGen® Enterprise PM appointments. If the check box is not selected, only providers are available in the Appointments section. |
Override EHR appointment "reason" and "subject" fields with "details" and "event" from PM appointment | This preference controls which items from a NextGen® Enterprise PM appointment appear in the NextGen® Enterprise EHR Work Flow window of the Appointment section in the Reason and Subject columns. If cleared, the NextGen® Enterprise PM event appears in the Reason column and the NextGen® Enterprise PM description appears in the Subject column. If selected, the NextGen® Enterprise PM details appear in the Reason column and the event appears in the Subject column. |
Save zoom level for images | To save time while viewing the NextGen® Enterprise EHR images, you can select this option to save the image zoom setting. The zoom level is reapplied when the image is viewed again. If multiple users view the same image, it retains only the latest zoom setting.

Allow twelve diagnoses | This option enables users to increase the number of diagnosis codes that can be associated with a procedure from 4 to 12 codes. The first four diagnosis codes are associated with the CPT4® code. Codes 5-8 are applied at the encounter level in NextGen® Enterprise PM and are not attached to a charge. Diagnosis Codes from 9 to 12 are for 5010 only. The 12 diagnoses codes appear on the Charge Posting window in NextGen® Enterprise PM. All of these 12 codes can be sent on the 837 electronic claim. For NextGen® Enterprise EHR, the 12 diagnosis codes are supported by Superbill, the Procedure Summary, and the Patient Procedure trigger. |
Allow patient procedure activity against a locked encounter from the PM or external source | This option controls whether or not charge activity from NextGen® Enterprise PM or an external application updates the Procedures module on encounters that are locked in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. For example, a new charge is added or an existing charge is modified in NextGen® Enterprise PM on an encounter that is already locked in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. You can select this check box to allow the charge activity in NextGen® Enterprise PM or an external application to update the Procedures module on locked encounters in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. If not selected, the charge activity in NextGen® Enterprise PM or an external application does not update the Procedures module on locked encounters in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. |
Set encounter date to billable date for new encounters | This option enables you to set billable date as the encounter date in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. If you do not select the check box, the encounter date is the date and time the encounter is created. This setting applies only to the encounters created with the Add Encounter window in NextGen® Enterprise PM and NextGen® Document Management. |
Warn on multi edit | This option warns users when they open a patient record that is already being accessed by another user. The Patient Chart Access window displays the user name, workstation, date and time of access, and user phone number. This check box also controls manual access to the Patient Chart Access window from in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. |
Skip sign in to the Provider Approval Queue | This option enables users to access the Provider Approval Queue directly without logging on when they select the PAQ button on the toolbar. They are not prompted to log on. |
Disable document editing in the Provider Approval Queue | This option prevents users from editing documents that are pending in the PAQ. |
Enable Spell Check | This option is enabled by default. The preference can be turned off using practice-level or user-level settings. For more information, go to the NextGen Healthcare Success Community and download the Using Spelling Checker in NextGen® Enterprise EHR guide. |
Allow CDA Practice Filters | This option enables users to check the box on the filter window to allow the filter to be at the practice level, when it is set to "Y". The default value is "N". |
Use custom view as default CDA view | This option enables users to set the CDA view in NextGen® Enterprise EHR to a custom view as default. This view is optimized for a quick access to the most commonly used sections of the CDA. |
Allow DSM/MSU Practice Filters | This option enables users to define whether practice filters can be defined for a specific practice in the Data Share module and the Medical Summary Utility. To allow users to define the practice filters, you must grant permission in System Administrator, Allow Updating Practice Filters check box. Enable user feedback survey | This option enables you to provide feedback for NextGen® Enterprise EHR. The check box is turned off by default.
A feedback window is displayed when you do any of the following:
As a user, you have the option to rate the application on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. Additionally, you can offer your valuable suggestions or comments. You can either cancel the feedback window or respond with minimal effort. |
Enable CPOE Order Search Bar | This option enables users to show or hide the CPOE Order Search bar in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. This check box is enabled by default. |
NextGen Virtual Visit Indicator | If the practice has a license for NextGen Virtual Visits™, you can enable NextGen Virtual Visit Indicator. The Schedule On Demand NextGen Virtual Visit option gets enabled and the Virtual Visit link appears in the Encounter History tab in NextGen® Enterprise EHR, which allows you to access NextGen Virtual Visits™.

Enable Present on Admission in Procedure Module | This option enables the Present on Admission button in the Procedures module. You can use the Add or Update buttons to update the POA information on the POA window in the Procedures module. |
Auto Logout Interval | You can use the up and down arrows to set the NextGen® Enterprise EHR automatic logout interval for all users in the practice. Users are automatically logged out of NextGen® Enterprise EHR if they have not used the system for a specified amount of time. If the user does not have the user-level setting checked in the NextGen® Enterprise EHR preferences, the practice setting is used. If the user-level setting is enabled, then the user setting overrides the practice setting. |
NextGen Web Service Export Path | You can enter a default path for the location where the Continuity of Care Document (CCD) are exported. |
Tenant | You can enter the tenant name for NextGen Population Health Single Sign-On. If you set the tenant name in Practice Preferences, it is considered over the value set in Universal Preferences and Enterprise Preferences. |
Certificate Path | You can select the path where the security certificate for NextGen Population Health Single Sign-On is stored. If you set the security certificate path in Practice Preferences, it is considered over the value set in Universal Preferences and Enterprise Preferences. |

Title Bar Attribute 1-4 | To improve the accuracy of patient identification, you can select the patient attributes to appear in the NextGen® Enterprise EHR title bar. Attribute 1 displays first, Attribute 2 displays second, and so on. Having two patient identifiers meet with one of the 2009 National Patient Safety Goals set by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Organization. You can include Gender, Preferred Name, Age, and Date of Birth in the title bar. |
