You can electronically submit a prescription directly to a selected pharmacy. The ePrescribing feature uses the Surescripts retail and mail-order networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator. You should remember the following points before submitting prescriptions electronically: Any medication you submit electronically must have a valid patient's Rx eligibility request, a valid SIG, a numeric quantity value, and a unit type. When resubmitting (including responding to refill requests) a medication previously prescribed without a valid unit type, you must update the unit type to a valid value. You can submit controlled substances electronically only if ePCS is set up. User-defined medications are not supported with Surescripts. You cannot send a medication that is not DEA Schedule 0 without the required setup. If you need supervision, you cannot send a prescription without selecting the appropriate supervising physician. To send Electronic Prescriptions of Controlled Substances (ePCS), a provider must meet the following Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) requirements: The provider's relationship with user is set up as self. The provider's retail service level is set up for ePCS. A valid DEA number is assigned to the provider. If a provider is exempted from the DEA registration, a link to the institutional practitioner’s DEA number must exist. Two-factor authentication credentials are added for the provider. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) requires the application to restrict printing, faxing, and electronically prescribing controlled substances. The application applies the following rules for controlled substances: If you printed or faxed a controlled substance prescription, you cannot electronically send that prescription. If you electronically prescribe a controlled substance, you can print or fax that prescription. The printed or faxed report indicates that the printed or faxed copy is not for dispensing. If you electronically prescribe a controlled substance and the transmission fails, you can print or fax that prescription. The printed or faxed report shows a message stating the prescription was originally sent electronically to a pharmacy. The report also shows the following information: The pharmacy’s name The date and time of the eRx message A notification that the eRx message failed Note: The application meets the DEA cryptography requirements. To transmit electronic prescriptions for controlled substances (ePCS) according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) mandates, providers and system administrators can run ePCS reports to view and monitor the activities related to these transmissions for security and auditing purposes. The ePCS reports are described below: ePCS Prescriptions Report enables the provider to view and monitor the prescriptions for controlled substances sent electronically for their patients. The provider must ensure that the prescriptions are legitimate, and no suspicious activity has occurred. The recommended viewing of these reports is daily. ePCS Auditable Events Report enables the system administrator to track ePCS actions and events for one or more users to determine if any of these actions indicate signs of improper usage or abuse. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) allows DEA registrants to write Electronic Prescriptions of Controlled Substances (ePCS). To control who can send these electronic prescriptions, the System Administrator application meets the DEA regulations that determine how applications and practices are to restrict eRx access rights. These measures rely on identity-proofing to prevent fraud. To comply with the DEA regulations, NextGen Healthcare providers can use any of the following ePCS authentication methods: Symantec™ VIP Token IdenTrust Mobile Authentication Service Imprivata Confirm ID™ for EPCS Note: You can prevent a specific medication (controlled substance) from being electronically prescribed by selecting the Do not allow eRX option from the Medication Tasks master file in File Maintenance. Each provider must have a valid, active individual Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number to electronically prescribe controlled substances. Newly issued DEA numbers may take up to 30 days to be processed. In File Maintenance, from Master Files > System, select Providers. The Providers List window opens. Double-click a provider. The Modify Provider Information window opens. In the Modify Provider Information window, select the Practice tab. Enter or update the DEA number for the provider as applicable. Modify Provider Information Select the ePrescribing tab. In the Networks section, select open menu, and then select Retail. Select Enroll or Update as applicable.
