Medication Universal Preferences

The Medication Universal Preferences control various elements in the Medications module and the Medication Allergies module in NextGen® Enterprise EHR.

Allergy Interaction Level Display DefaultSets the default display levels for allergy interactions for all users in the system.
Allergy Interaction Level Display MinimumSets the minimum allowed display level that a user is able to set in the User Preferences in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. The following display levels are available:

3 - All significant and cross sensitivity allergy alerts

2 - All significant allergy interactions

1 - Most significant allergy interactions

0 - Disable allergy alerts

Setting the minimum display level determines the level of allergic interactions displayed. For example, setting the preference to display Level 2 displays both Level 1 and Level 2 alerts whereas setting the value to Level 3 displays Level 1, 2, and 3 alerts.

Allow Entry of User Defined MedicationWhen set to True, the Add UDM button is available on the new Medication Search window so that users can add user-defined medications.
Allow Fax Pending MedicationsEnables the faxing of medications with a Pending status.
Allow non-numerics in Medication Qty FieldEnables usages of alpha characters in the Quantity field of the Medications module.
Auto Save Meds on RenewWhen set to True, this preference enables automatic saving of patient's prescription information when the medication is renewed.
Brand RxCurrently not in use.
Bypass Interactions When Renewing Active PrescriptionsWhen set to True, the preference will bypass any Drug Utilization Review (DUR) checks, whenever the Renew action is being performed on an Active medication.
Check Drug Disease ContraindicationsEnables the automatic cross-check for drug-to-disease contraindications when a medication is added. A warning displays when a contraindication exists. You can also set this preference at the user level.
Check Drug DuplicatesEnables the automatic check for duplicate medication entries when a medication is added. A warning displays when a duplicate exists. You can also set this preference at the user level.
Check InteractionEnables the automatic medication interactions check when a medication is added. A warning displays when an interaction exists. You can also set this preference at the user level.
Default End Date on RenewEnables automatic calculation of the medication end date when a medication is renewed based on the length of prior prescriptions.
Direct Condition Interaction Level Display DefaultIndicates the default level of notification in NextGen® Enterprise EHR for drug interactions due to direct conditions (conditions that a drug might be contraindicated to).
Direct Condition Interaction Level Displayed MinimumIndicates the minimum level that users can lower the interaction level for direct conditions.
Display Renewal History PopupWhen set to True, the Medication View list in the new Medications Module displays the latest active medications in the renewal chain. Inactive medications are not listed. Users can then see the entire renewal history by selecting the Full History button.
DUR - Display alert on Old Drug DataThis preference works in conjunction with the DUR - Drug Data expiry days preference.

If this preference is set to True, a check is performed each time a user enters medication data. If the medication data is older than the number of days specified in the drug expiry days, an alert generates.

DUR - Display alert on User Defined Allergies (UDAs)When set to True, this preference generates an alert when interactions are being run against User Defined Allergies. This alert reminds the user that User Defined Allergies are not screens for drug/drug, drug/allergy, drug/condition interactions.
DUR - Display alert on User Defined Medications (UDMs)When set to True, this preference generates an alert when interactions are being run against User Defined Medications. This alert reminds the user that User Defined Medications are not screens for drug/drug, drug/allergy, drug/condition interactions.
DUR - Display Cancel DUR ConfirmationWhen set to True and a user cancels a medication due to a DUR alert, a Cancel Drug Interaction message displays for the user to confirm canceling the drug interaction.
DUR - Drug Data expiry daysThis preference works in conjunction with the DUR - Display alert on Old Drug Data preference.

Indicates the number of days that medication data is considered current. After this time period, the DUR Alert on Old Drug Data is generated if the preference is set to True.

DUR Text Required for Condition Contraindication OverrideWhen set to True, this preference requires users to enter an explanation for overriding the warning when the prescribed medication is contraindicated due to a diagnosis or condition recorded for the patient.
DUR Text Required for DEA Limit Exceed OverrideWhen set to True, this preference requires users to enter an explanation for overriding the warning when the prescribed medication exceeds the DEA limit.
DUR Text Required for Drug Allergy OverrideWhen set to True, this preference requires users to enter an explanation for overriding the warning when the prescribed medication contains ingredients that conflict with the list of allergies noted for the patient.
DUR Text Required for Drug Duplicate OverrideWhen set to True, this preference requires users to enter an explanation for overriding the warning when the prescribed medication is a duplicate of a medication already on the patient's active drug list.
DUR Text Required for Drug Interaction OverrideWhen set to True, this preference requires users to enter an explanation for overriding the warning when the prescribed medication causes an adverse effect when combined with a medication the patient is currently taking.
DUR Text Required for Geriatric Precautions OverrideWhen set to True, this preference requires users to enter an explanation for overriding the warning when the prescribed medication causes an adverse effect in geriatric patients.
DUR Text Required for Pediatric Precautions OverrideWhen set to True, this preference requires users to enter an explanation for overriding the warning when the prescribed medication causes an adverse effect in pediatric patients.
Geriatric AgeSets up the specifications for Dosing information. You can also set this preference at the user level.
Geriatric Precautions Interaction Level Display DefaultSets the default display levels for geriatric precautions and contraindications for all users in the system.
Geriatric Precautions Interaction Level Display MinimumSets the minimum allowed display level that a user is able to set in the User Preferences in NextGen® Enterprise EHR.
Highlight Required FieldsAllows users to highlight all of the specified required fields in the Medication Module.
Inactive Medication Ingredient AlertEnables NextGen® Enterprise EHR to check for inactive medication ingredients interactions. The default value is True. If the value is set to False, the inactive medication ingredients interactions check is disabled.
Include Meds Stopped Today in DURSets whether medications stopped today are included in the DUR check. The default setting is True. If it is set to False, then medications stopped today are not included in the DUR check. This preference only applies to the single screen DUR in NextGen® Enterprise EHR. You can also set this preference at the user level.
Interaction Level Display DefaultEnter a value between 0 and 4 to set the default level of DUR Interactions that displays to users. If no value is set, all medication interactions are displayed.

The levels and their meanings are listed below:

Level 1 – Contraindicated Drug Combination: This drug combination is clearly contraindicated in all cases and should not be dispensed or administered to the same patient.
  • Methenamine/sulfonamides
  • Selected sympathomimetics/MAOIs
  • Cyclosporine/Rosuvastatin
Level 2 – Severe Interaction: Action is required to reduce the risk of severe adverse interaction.
  • Anticoagulants/salicylates
  • Amiodarone/quinidine
  • Ergot alkaloids/nitrates
Level 3 – Moderate Interaction: Assess the risk to the patient and take action as needed.
  • Narcotics/phenothiazines
  • Lidocaine/cimetidine
  • Nsaids/loop diuretics
Level 4 – Undetermined Severity: Alternative Therapy Interaction: Assess the risk to the patient and take action as needed.
  • Anticoagulants/gingko biloba
  • Garlic/protease Inhibitors
  • St. John's Wort/beta-blockers
Interaction Level Displayed MinimumIf users have the right to set their own levels, enter the value between 0 and 4 that determines which level users can set for themselves. Users cannot set the level to less than this level. If no value is set, users who have the right to set their own levels can turn off all warnings.

The levels and their meanings are listed below:

0 – Off; Do not display any warnings

1 – Display only level 1 warnings

2 – Display only level 1 and level 2 warnings

3 – Display only level 1, level 2, and level 3 warnings

4 – Display all warnings (levels 1 through 4)

Maximum DEA Level Allowed for FaxingIndicates the maximum Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) level for medications that are allowed to be faxed. The default setting is Level 3, which means no DEA Level 1 and Level 2 medications can be faxed.
Med IntervalIndicates the amount of time assigned before the system performs an automatic search for a medication. The value is in milliseconds. The default interval is 800 milliseconds. You can also set this preference at the user level.
Pediatric Precautions Interaction Level Display DefaultSets the default display levels for pediatric precautions and contraindications for all users in the system.
Pediatric Precautions Interaction Level Display MinimumSets the minimum allowed display level that a user is able to set in the User Preferences in NextGen® Enterprise EHR.
Prompt for allergy deletion reasonWhen set to True, NextGen® Enterprise EHR prompts users to enter a reason for deletion when they delete an allergy. The default setting is False.

To require the reason, also set the Require reason for allergy deletion Universal Preference.

Prompt for prescribed meds deletion reasonWhen set to True, NextGen® Enterprise EHR prompts users to enter a deletion reason when they delete a prescribed medication. The default setting is False. When the preference is set to False, no prompt appears in the Medications module.
Related Condition Interaction Level Display DefaultIndicates the default level notification in NextGen® Enterprise EHR for drug interactions due to related conditions (conditions related to direct conditions).
Related Condition Interaction Level Displayed MinimumIndicates the minimum level that users can lower the interaction level for related conditions.
Require reason for allergy deletionWhen set to True, NextGen® Enterprise EHR requires users to enter a reason for deletion when they delete an allergy. The default setting is False.

This setting works in conjunction with the Prompt for allergy delete reason Universal Preference.

Rx Fax Report Include AddressDisplays the address of the pharmacy to which a prescription is faxed on the RxFax Report.
Secondary LanguageSets up the secondary language.
Single screen drug utilization reviewWhen set to True, it combines multiple DUR warnings for a single medication into one window. When set to False, each warning displays in a separate window.
Use DEA Restriction Logic on Medication RefillsEnables the ability to specify refills. You can also set this preference at the user level.
Use Pediatric Sigs from FDBWhen set to True, this preference will allow the user to select Pediatric Sigs, provided by First Data Bank (FDB), for any pediatric patient.
