Configure External Applications

System Administrator provides the EXTERNAL APPLICATION SETUP window to configure each external application that users can open from NextGen® Enterprise EHR or NextGen® Enterprise PM.

For NextGen® Enterprise EHR, this configuration applies to both the External Applications button and the Launch External Application template trigger.

  1. In System Administrator, select View > External Application Setup.
The EXTERNAL APPLICATION SETUP window opens. The list of licensed applications appears in the left pane.
    EXTERNAL APPLICATION SETUP Window

If the EXTERNAL APPLICATION SETUP window does not open, a message may appear indicating the following.

    • Your user account does not have permission to access the EXTERNAL APPLICATION SETUP window. In this case, enable the OPERATIONS > Administration > External Application Setup security right for your user group.
    • The API is not available. For information about troubleshooting NextGen API services, refer to the NextGen®API Suite Manager Installation Guide forNextGen®Enterprise in NextGen Healthcare Success Community, or contact NextGen Healthcare Support.
    • No external applications are enabled for your system. If you have purchased any external applications, contact the application vendor and report that its application is not appearing in your EXTERNAL APPLICATION SETUP window.
  2. To view all applications, regardless of whether they are currently active, change the default Showing Active Applications filter to Showing All Applications.
    Showing All Applications

  3. To determine the status of an application, refer to the icon next to the application name.
    • Active. The application is active and can be configured.
    • Blocked. The application has been blocked by NextGen Healthcare Support Support because of an issue with the application. Contact NextGen Healthcare Support for more information.
    • Deactivated. The application is available but is currently deactivated by the Application Status setting at the bottom of the EXTERNAL APPLICATION SETUP window.
    • Failed Hash Validation. The application is inactive because hash validation has failed. This scenario can occur if the database instance was created from a backup of a different database instance. To address this issue, contact NextGen Healthcare Support.
  4. Select an application in the left pane.
  5. If you have the filter set to Showing All Applications and you want to hide an application that is currently blocked by NextGen Healthcare, do the following:
    1. Select an application that has the blocked icon.
    2. Select Delete.
Delete Button in the EXTERNAL APPLICATION SETUP Window

The selected application disappears from the left pane. However, if NextGen Healthcare unblocks the application at a later date, the application will reappear in this list. Any options that you previously configured for the application will be restored.
  6. Review the details about the application in these read-only fields: Application Name, Application Id, and URL Provided by NextGen.
  7. To change the display name of the external application, enter a name in App Name Override.
  8. If you need the application to be accessed through an alternative URL, contact NextGen Healthcare Support. After Support adds the alternative URL, an encrypted version of the URL appears in the URL Override field.
  9. To control whether the external application displays a banner with the patient name, set Patient Banner to Required or May be hidden.
Patient banners are typically not needed because the patient name is visible in NextGen® Enterprise EHR on the Patient Information Card (PIC) and in NextGen® Enterprise PM on the Patient Information Bar.
  10. In Practices, select the practices that are allowed to access the external application.
    Practices List

To select or deselect all practices simultaneously, right-click in the Practices list, and choose Select All or Unselect All.

  11. Under USER GROUPS, configure the following:
    1. In the Practice list, select one of the practices that you previously selected in the above Practices list.
      Select a Practice

    2. From the User Groups list, select the user groups you want to allow from that practice.
USER GROUPS and User Groups Sections

In the User Groups list, any user groups lacking the Allow API Access right appear in grey strikethrough text. You cannot select such user groups.

      • To filter the list of user groups displayed, enter text in the Search User Groups Search - Magnifying Glass field. The list is filtered progressively as you enter characters. The list shows all user group names that include the search text, whether the search text occurs at the beginning, middle, or end of a user group name and whether the search text is uppercase or lowercase.
      • To select or deselect all the displayed user groups simultaneously, right-click in the User Groups list, and choose Select All or Unselect All.
      • To display user groups based on whether they have been selected, right-click in the User Groups list, and select Show Enabled User Groups, Show Disabled User Groups, or Show All.
  12. If needed, repeat step 11 for any other practices that are allowed to run the same external application.
  13. The Default Browser setting shows the type of browser component that was configured for this application in the Developer Portal. You can override this default by selecting Chrome or Microsoft Browser.
If you select Chrome, then options appear to enable the display of the developer tools pane. (For a description of the developer tools pane, refer to the help in a Google Chrome web browser.) Control the display of developer tools as follows:
    • To enable the user to open the developer tools with a keyboard shortcut, select Enable DevTools Shortcut.

After the external application is running, the user can open the developer tools by selecting Ctrl+Shift+J.

    • To cause the developer tools to open automatically when the external application opens, select AutoLaunch DevTools.

If you select Microsoft Browser for the default browser, then the developer tools pane is not available to the user.

  14. To activate or deactivate the external application, set the Application Status toggle to Active or Inactive.
  15. Select Save.
