Document Incisions and Drainage Procedures

You can document the Incisions and Drainage (I&D) procedures performed in office.

  1. Open the IORTS Castsplint Apply template.
  2. Click I & D in the left pane.
    The IORTSproc Ind template opens.

  3. Select the appropriate I&D procedure type.

    If you select Ndle Asp of Fluid Coll (needle aspiration) or I and D of Fluid Coll (incision and drainage), the list automatically opens for the following fields. You can select the options from the lists.

    • Type of Fluid
    • Side
    • Location
    • Instrument used

    If you select I and D of Abscess (abscess incision and drainage), the list automatically opens for the following fields. You can select the options from the lists.

    • Side
    • Location
    • Instrument used
  4. Enter the anesthetic injection dosage as follows:
    1. Click the Lido w/o field, and select the injection dosage for Lidocaine without epinephrine.
    2. Click the Lido /Epi field, and select the injection dosage for Lidocaine with epinephrine.
    3. Click the Marc field, and select the injection dosage for Marcaine.
  5. Click the Qty (cc) field, enter the fluid quantity in cubic centimeters in the Quantity of Fluid (cc) window, then click OK.
  6. Type the appearance of the fluid taken in the Appearance field.
  7. Select any of the following options to indicate if you are sending the fluid for a cell, crystal, or culture tests.
    • Cell
    • Cry
    • Cx
  8. Select the following options as needed for the dressing and wound care.
    • Applied sterile dressing and discussed wound care instructions
    • Patient tolerated procedure well
  9. Select the appropriate option for packing.
  10. Enter any additional details in the Comments field.
  11. Click Add to Grid.
    A message appears stating that the procedure has been sent to the grid.
  12. Select the Performed by check box.
    The name of the provider who performed the procedure and the date and time of the procedure are automatically filled in the corresponding fields.
  13. Click Save & Close.
