Electronic Prescriptions

You can electronically submit a prescription directly to a selected pharmacy. The ePrescribing feature uses the Surescripts retail and mail-order networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator. You should remember the following points before submitting prescriptions electronically: Any medication you submit electronically must have a valid patient's Rx eligibility request, a valid SIG, a numeric quantity value, and a unit type. When resubmitting (including responding to refill requests) a medication previously prescribed without a valid unit type, you must update the unit type to a valid value. You can submit controlled substances electronically only if ePCS is set up. User-defined medications are not supported with Surescripts. You cannot send a medication that is not DEA Schedule 0 without the required setup. If you need supervision, you cannot send a prescription without selecting the appropriate supervising physician. Real-Time Prescription Benefit

The Medications module supports the Real-Time Prescription Benefit (RTPB) feature when you prescribe new medications. Note: The RTPB feature is supported only with Surescripts. The RTPB feature enables you to view the estimated cost of the prescribed medication for patients based on their specific formulary and benefit coverage. This feature also enables you to view the available alternative medications. You can select a cost-efficient alternative medication and replace the originally requested medication. Estimated Patient Cost The RTPB feature is available if the following conditions are met: The RTPB universal preference and user preference are enabled. Patient has Rx eligibility. Patient has an active pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) coverage. Patient's PBM participates in RTPB. Note: If the Medications module or the patient's pharmacy does not respond, the Benefit Information Unavailable. Retry? link appears. Prescribe Medication Using the Real-Time Prescription Benefit

In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, open the Medications module. Run the Rx Eligibility for the patient, and then select Prescribe New. Search for and select the medication using the formulary search option. The medication you selected appears under the Temporary status. Temporary Status Select the applicable pharmacy. Enter the medication quantity and day supply. The day supply value is calculated by dividing the prescribed quantity by the daily doses. The field supports up to three numeric values. Note: The estimated cost of the medication for the patient appears, and the Show Alternatives/Pricing Coverage link becomes available. Select Show Alternatives/ Pricing Coverage. The Alternatives/Pricing Coverage window opens and displays the alternative medication options, the patient’s deductible, and additional pricing coverage details. Enter Required Medication Information

You must enter the required medication information after selecting a medication. The required medication information depends on the settings in System Administrator. The fields that are enabled in the universal preference for your practice are highlighted in red in the Medications module. Contact your System Administrator regarding specific requirements for your medical facility. Search for and select a medication. Add a SIG.
