Best Practices for Managing Your Immunizations Life Cycle

To create and track your Immunization orders effectively, NextGen® Enterprise EHR Immunizations module provides comprehensive functionality that is based on how you set up Immunizations in File Maintenance and System Administrator. Each practice has its own unique Orders and Immunizations workflow. As you use the Immunizations module, consider your primary patient type, such as pediatric and your overall workflow. For example, immunizations orders flow may begin with your physician conducting an office visit, selecting immunizations, and then passing the administration of immunizations to the clinical staff. To help you process your immunizations more effectively, consider the following best practices for managing your immunizations life cycle: To view the current vaccine schedules to determine which immunizations are due, access the Immunization Schedules (that is Chart, Recommendation, and Registry). To order an immunization, select a vaccine, provide the appropriate vaccine detail,

Updating Lab and Radiology Orders

You can open an existing unlocked lab or radiology order and add or change details for it. You can also add comments for an updated order, if required. If the encounter associated with an order has been locked, you can only view the order. The Save, Save & Send, Save & Fax, Save & Print, or Save & Task actions are unavailable. When you update an unfinished order, you must complete all required fields that have been set up as Mandatory Data Points in File Maintenance Practice Preferences. These required fields appear in red text. If you do not fill in a required field, when you try to save your selections or entries, a message appears, prompting you to complete the field. Setting up Required fields for Immunizations Processing

For more efficient order processing and best clinical practices, your practice may need to set up certain fields as required. Required fields (or Mandatory Data Points) can be set up for all of the order types, that is, Lab, Radiology, and Immunizations. For example, your practice wants the Diagnosis field to be required when ordering a lab or radiology test; or, if you are ordering Immunizations, your practice determines Route and Expired Date should be required fields. You can set up fields as required in File Maintenance Practice Preferences. During the Immunizations ordering workflow, the required fields display as Red on the appropriate Immunizations window when you start the Immunization process (for example, selecting a vaccine) and when you complete an immunization administration (on the Vaccine Details tab). To better manage vaccine funding sources, the Immunizations module enables you to configure and update the Vaccine Funding source codes for your practice’s registries. When administering an immunization, the Vaccine Funding Source codes display in the Immunizations module when you create or update an Immunization order and select a Registry. The Vaccine Funding Source also displays in the Funding Source list on the Vaccine Details tab when you administer a vaccine.
