Using OCR to Update Patient Information and Insurance

To facilitate updates and reduce the risk of data entry errors, you can employ Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to retrieve a patient's demographic and insurance data from scans of the patient's driver’s license and medical insurance card. The driver's license supplies the patient's first, middle, and last names, address, date of birth, and sex. The insurance card supplies the patient’s payer and policy-related information such as the policy number, group name, group number, and policy expiration date.

Changes made to the patient's demographic and insurance data through the OCR feature are audited. For information on the audit details of the OCR feature, go to the NextGen Healthcare Success Community, and download the Advanced Auditing and Significant Events Overview for NextGen Enterprise.
