NextGen® Enterprise EHR allows you to search for and prescribe medications using the formulary or non-formulary search. You can select to use the medication search window or the formulary search window. To use the formulary search window, you must have either Surescripts or InfoScan services enabled. In NextGen® Enterprise EHR, from the Tools menu, select Preferences. By default, the General tab of the Preferences window opens. Select the Formulary tab. Formulary tab In the General section, specify whether you want to use formulary search as the default medication search. In the View Options section, specify whether you want to view formulary note, formulary status, or both. In the Drug Information section, specify whether you want to view one or more of the following medication details: Chemical name Only drug name Over-the-counter medications Medications that are only on formulary In the Formulary Status section, specify whether you want to view formulary status in a text format, an image format, or both formats. Specify whether you want to use the Real-Time Prescription Benefit feature in the Medications module. Note: The Enable Real-Time Prescription Benefits option is available only if you enable the Surescripts Real-Time Prescription Benefits universal preference in System AdConfigure Formulary Search Preferences

You can select a medication from the list displaying medication search results. Open NextGen® Mobile. Select a patient and open the New Rx view. New medication view To search medications for a patient using formulary or non-formulary medication search, do one of the following: In Search Medications, enter the medication name or enter at least three characters and perform a medication search. For formulary search enabled providers, select the Search Medications list and select a formulary search criteria. You can perform extended searches for medications using the medication search field on the New Rx view. If you have set up the ePCS permissions, the search results display the controlled substances (CS) medication in red with the respective Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) class codes: c1,c2,c3,c4, and c5. For NextGen Healthcare clinics and providers with appropriate permission, you can perform a formulary search to display a list of medications with one of the following formulary eligibility icon. - Preferred - This drug is preferred over all other drugs under the same therapeutic category. - On Formulary - This drug is authorized for reimbursement for the payer. - Unknown - The selected payer does not provide information for the medication under the selected formulary. - Non-Formulary - Specified by the payer as not on the formulary or is on the formulary at a higher co-pay level. Open the Medication Search window. If you perform a regular medication search, the next time you open the Medication Search window, the Find pane is highlighted. If you use Medication Favorites to search, the next time you open the Medication Search window the Favorites pane is highlighted. Before you begin Before you use the NextGen® Enterprise EHR ePrescribing feature, the following ePrescribing setup procedures must be completed: Install NextGen® Communication Services (NCS). Enable Surescripts functionality in NCS. Note: Before you attempt to set up ePrescribing, you must contact NextGen Healthcare Support to install and configure NCS. Download the Surescripts pharmacies. Map unmatched pharmacies and add unmatched pharmacies as new. Check the pharmacy service level. Enroll the providers in the Surescripts network. Set up eRx permissions for the providers. Set up ePCS (Electronic Prescriptions of Controlled Substances) for authorized providers.
