DEA Restrictions and Requirements

The Medications module supports the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Federal Regulations that restrict the number of refills for controlled medications (CII). Set up the DEA Refills Limit Warning Preference

You can set up the DEA Refills preference to display a DEA Limit Warning window when a provider has selected a higher number of refills than allowed by the DEA federal regulations. The Display DEA Refill Limit Warning check box is selected by default. To disable the display of this warning, clear the Display DEA Refill Limit Warning check box. Manage Medication Defaults Field Descriptions

You can use the following table when adding or modifying medications. Field Description Brand Name Displays the brand name of the medication. Generic Name Displays the generic name of the medication. Form Displays the form in which the medication is administered. DEA Class Displays the Drug Enforcement Agency Class that indicates the degree of potential abuse and level of Federal control over the medication. View Associated NDC Identifiers Displays the National Drug Codes for the medication. The NDC ID is a unique identifier for a medication assigned by the NDC. Do not allow eRx If the state does not allow electronic prescriptions for this medication, select this check box to prevent users from doing so. Do not allow faxing If the state does not allow faxed prescriptions for this medication, select this check box to prevent users from doing so. State DEA Class By default, this field automatically displays the same class selected in the DEA Class field. If necessary, select a different

Enter Required Medication Information

You must enter the required medication information after selecting a medication. The required medication information depends on the settings in System Administrator. The fields that are enabled in the universal preference for your practice are highlighted in red in the Medications module. Contact your System Administrator regarding specific requirements for your medical facility. Search for and select a medication. Add a SIG. Do one of the following: In the Problem section, select Add. Select Patient Conditions View. The Patient Condition panel opens. Patient Condition pane To select the diagnosis from the Patient Condition panel, do one of the following: Double-click a diagnosis. Right-click a diagnosis and then select Add To Medication. Drag a diagnosis to the Problem section. You can add up to three diagnoses to a medication. Select a pharmacy. Note: The Pharmacy field is available only for medications in Temporary status. Working with eRx Refill Requests from the Medications Icon

The Manage Refills window displays the patient's demographic information, provider information, pharmacy information, and the refill request details. This information is sent from Surescripts. You can either approve or deny the refill request. After you respond to a Refill Request from the Workflow > Clinical Tasking list, the request is no longer available in the Medications module and the Workflow window. View Refill Requests from the Medications Module You can view new eRx refill requests from the Medications module. Approve an eRx Refill Request from the Manage Refills Window You can approve an eRx refill request using the manage refills window. Deny an eRx Refill Request from the Manage Refills Window You can deny an eRx refill request task and select Denial - New prescription to follow reason from the Manage Refills window. Add User-Defined Medications from the Medications Module

You cannot delete a user-defined medication. The Add UDM button is available only if the Allow Entry of User Defined Medication universal preference is set to True. Open the Medication Search window. Medication Search Select the search type from the Search list. Enter a full or partial name of the medication in the Find field. If the medication does not exist in your database, select Add UDM. The Add User Defined Medication window opens. The Brand Name and Generic Name fields are required. Add User Defined Medication Enter the medication information, including: Form DEA Class Strength Route Add Defaults information, including: Quantity Refills Generic OK Default SIG For Generic Source select one of the following: Single Multiple Unspecified For Status select one of the following: Prescription Only Over the Counter For DEA Regulations, select or clear the Do not allow faxing check box.
