COVID-19 Vaccine Administration FAQ
Which minimum version of the Medication Update do I need to see COVID-19 vaccine details?
December 2020. This version contains the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine codes, as well as drug interaction and contraindication warnings.
When new vaccines are released, how will we get that content into our EHR?
We are working with First Databank (our data partner for medications and vaccines) for gaining access to any code sets approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to be included in future medication updates. These are being released to the industry ahead of vaccine approvals to allow time for the Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) community to prepare. NextGen Healthcare will then provide new medication updates, potentially outside of our once-a-month cadence, to support getting this detail to our clients.
Which version of NextGen Enterprise do I need to order and document COVID-19 vaccines?
Any currently supported version of NextGen® Enterprise EHR allows practices to record COVID-19 vaccines. Once a Medication Update package is applied, the vaccine data will be available. Some details in this guide for importing vaccine history from Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture (CCDA) documents or Registry connectivity specifics will be version specific. Please reach out to Support or your Account Manager with any questions on the functionality.
Does the Immunization module support rules and recommendations for the COVID-19 vaccines, as well as billing nuances?
We are currently working on adding clinical recommendations to the Immunization module for vaccine intervals, recommendations, and alerts against cross product vaccination. Additional work will be completed to automate the unique administration code billing requirements. More information will be released in a future patch.
What are NextGen Healthcare's best practice recommendations for tracking patients for the second dose of vaccine?
There are a variety of tools and solutions that can assist with tracking patients for the second dose of vaccine. Our first recommendation is to create reports for patients who have received the first dose. For point of care recommendations, Care Guidelines can be configured to display the need for vaccination, and tracking overdue doses.
What are the reporting guidelines for this vaccine?
The guidelines vary state by state. The industry is tracking these decisions as they are rapidly changing. For future messaging regarding reporting requirements for different municipalities, refer to the COVID-19 Hot Topic’s page using the following link: COVID-19 Resource Center page.
