Add Comments and Schedules for Laboratory and Diagnostic Order Items
For laboratory and diagnostic orders items, you can document the reason for ordering a test and create schedules for future and recurring orders.
Note: For more information on how to document comments for immunization order items, see Manage Immunization Order Details.
- Open CPOE.
- Select an order item.
- Assign diagnoses to the selected order item.
- Select the Laboratory or Diagnostic tab.
- To document comments for an order item, under Comments and Schedule, enter your comments in the corresponding Ordering Reason box.
- To create a schedule for a future or recurring order, select Set Schedule.
The Set Order Schedule window opens.
- From the Items Available for Schedule list, select the order item.
- For a future order, do the following:
- Select Future order (one-time only).
- To select the future processing date for the order, either select the number of days, weeks, months, or years in Schedule in, or select a specific date from the calendar.
- To select the expiration date for the schedule, either select the number of days, weeks, months, or years in Expires, or select a specific date from the calendar.
Note: You can update the expiration date time frame. However, you cannot exceed the number of months your practice has set up in File Maintenance > EHR > Practices > Practice Preferences > Orders Module > Future Recurring Orders Expires After.
- To automatically release the order when due, select the Automatically release the order when it is due check box.

- To assign dates for more future orders, select the next order to schedule.
You can set up a future order schedule for a glucose test for the subsequent week, and another schedule for a urinalysis test to occur on the subsequent month.
- To remove the schedule for an order, select the order in the list, and then select Unschedule.
- To save your future order schedule and close the Set Order Schedule window, select Accept & Close.
Note: After creating your future order schedule, you can also set up recurring orders in the same session of the Set Order Schedule window. To set up Recurring Order schedules, you can clear Accept & Close and select Accept and Recurring order and continue with your selections.
- For a recurring order, do the following:
- Select Recurring order.
- To select the re-occurrence start date on the current date, select the Start Today check box.
- To select a future re-occurrence date for the order, either select the number of days, weeks, months, or years in Start in, or select a specific date from the calendar.
- To select the expiration date for the schedule, either select the number of days, weeks, months, or years in Expires, or select a specific date from the calendar.
Note: You can update the expiration date time frame. However, you cannot exceed the number of months your practice has set up in File Maintenance > EHR > Practices > Practice Preferences > Orders Module > Future Recurring Orders Expires After.

Note: After creating your recurring order schedule, you can also set up future orders in the same session of the Set Order Schedule window. To set up future order schedules, you can clear Accept & Close and select Accept and Future order (one-time only) and continue with your selections.
