Term	Definition
Image acquisition device	A device that acquires images using the TWAIN protocol, such as a scanner.
Image	An item containing visual information such as an X-ray.
Document	An item containing text. When you scan an item and store it in NextGen® Document Management, the item becomes an image. All the items that you can search, view, and manipulate with NextGen® Document Management are technically images. Some are images of documents, while others are images of images.
TWAIN	A standard software protocol and applications programming interface (API) that regulates communication between software applications and image acquisition devices.
Remote scanning	An ability to operate a separate NextGen® Document Management at a remote location that uses the main image archive, located at the primary location. This process minimizes the network congestion due to image data.
Transfer interval	A period of time permitted to pass between the transference of segments of an image to or from a remote location.
Sleep interval	A period of time permitted to pass between the transference of separate images to or from a remote location.

Storing and Retrieving Documents and Images

You can use NextGen® Document Management, a document storage and retrieval application, to do the following: Scan or import documents and images into a central repository. Scan and view images from a remote location. File and store documents and images. Search and retrieve documents and images. View and annotate documents and images. Note: Use images that are scanned or imported into the system through image acquisition methods, such as File Import, Directory Import, and Scanner or Scan Template, for reference purposes only. Due to the potential discrepancies in image quality, do not use these images for diagnostic purposes. You can scan documents and images by using the following options: RemoteScan® from Quest TSScan from TerminalWorks NextGen® Document Management interfaces with NextGen® Enterprise EHR and NextGen® Enterprise PM. Connect a Scanner

You can use NextGen® Document Management with any TWAIN-compliant scanner or imaging device. Note: NextGen® Document Management does not support network-based scanners or scanners that save images on network drives instead of on the local disk. If you use a network-based scanner, you must save images in the TIFF (.tif) format. Install the TWAIN driver for the scanner or an imaging device on the computer where NextGen® Document Management is installed. Note: You can download the TWAIN driver from the scanner manufacturer's website. Connect a cable from the scanner to a USB, SCSI, or parallel port on the NextGen® Document Management computer. Note: You must use the fastest connection to connect the scanner to the computer. With a faster connection, you can scan large images such as X-rays. A USB or SCSI connection increases the scanning speed, but a parallel port connection reduces the scanning speed. You can now use the scanner with NextGen® Document Management.
