Select an Image Acquisition Device

Before you can use NextGen® Document Management to add images to your archive, you must select an input source. In most cases, your input device is a scanner. However, any TWAIN-compliant device that is installed on your system can serve as the input source for NextGen® Document Management. Open NextGen® Document Management. On the menu, selectFile > Select Scanner.The Select Source window opens and lists the available devices. Select a device, and then select Select. Parent topic: Configure NextGen Document Management

Configure Scan Templates

You can create templates with pre-configured TWAIN settings that you can apply to a batch when you scan documents. The template adjusts the TWAIN interface settings that control the scanner. Open File Maintenance. Under System in Master Files, select Document Management, and then select Scan Templates.The Scan Templates List window opens. Select the open menu button, and then select New.The Scan Control window opens. Enter a short description that indicates the type of scanning template you want to create. Select the number of dots per inch (DPI) to apply to the scanned images. Note: Higher resolutions slow down the scanning process and increase the size of scanned images. Select the color mode to apply to the scanned images.You can select Gray Scale to reduce image size and increase scanned image quality. For example, for better image qusality when you scan insurance cards or patient pictures, use Gray Scale instead of B&W (black and white). Set the brightness and contrast of the scan

Connect a Scanner

You can use NextGen® Document Management with any TWAIN-compliant scanner or imaging device. Note: NextGen® Document Management does not support network-based scanners or scanners that save images on network drives instead of on the local disk. If you use a network-based scanner, you must save images in the TIFF (.tif) format. Install the TWAIN driver for the scanner or an imaging device on the computer where NextGen® Document Management is installed. Note: You can download the TWAIN driver from the scanner manufacturer's website. Connect a cable from the scanner to a USB, SCSI, or parallel port on the NextGen® Document Management computer. Note: You must use the fastest connection to connect the scanner to the computer. With a faster connection, you can scan large images such as X-rays. A USB or SCSI connection increases the scanning speed, but a parallel port connection reduces the scanning speed. You can now use the scanner with NextGen® Document Management. You must configure security rights and remote scanning before you can install and use NextGen® Document Management. Before using NextGen® Document Management, you must complete the following actions that can be performed in any order: Connect a scanner or an image acquisition device to a computer with the TWAIN driver installed. Configure NextGen® Document Management security rights in System Administrator. Set up the archive location for all images and documents by doing one of the following: If you are licensed to use remote scanning, set up the Imaging Archive Location folder on your network. If you are not licensed to use remote scanning, set up the Network Share Location folder on your network. Working with the TWAIN Driver Interface

The manufacturer of every scanner provides a software interface that allows applications to interact with the scanner. Because this interface is based on a universally agreed standard called TWAIN, every application designed to work with TWAIN can use the same scanner. For example, this TWAIN Driver interface shown is provided by Fujitsu for its model fi-4120C scanner. This is the scanner interface you would see within NextGen® Document Management if you are using the fi-4120C scanner. If you had another application such as Adobe® Photoshop® on the same PC, you can see the same interface when you scanned images with Adobe® Photoshop®. TWAIN driver interface for a specific scanner model While the TWAIN Driver interface supplied by each manufacturer functions equally well within any application designed to use TWAIN-compliant devices, each interface can have a different layout.
