Handling Duplicate Tests

You can handle the duplicate test that are associated with a patient guidelines.

Duplicate tests can result from having more than one care guideline active for a patient. When a patient has more than one care guideline active, it is likely that a test or exam is duplicated by the guidelines.

For tests or exams that are duplicated in two or more active guidelines associated with a patient, only one test or exam is maintained for the patient.

  • The test or exam that is maintained has the lowest start age, the highest stop age, and the lowest time interval.

For example, the lipid panel test is part of both the health maintenance and the CAD guidelines. If a patient has CAD, a lipid panel is recommended every year with no start age specified, and a health maintenance lipid panel is recommended every 5 years starting at age 45. Since these are duplicate tests, the system automatically compares the interval and the start and stop ages. The lipid panel is included for the patient at the 1-year interval starting when the care guideline orderable item (formerly protocol) is activated.

  • The handling of duplicate tests or exams by the system is based on the text of the description.

If there is a guideline that has AST as a lab test description and another guideline that has SGOT as a lab test description, the system will treat these as two different tests.
