Default New Encounters to In Progress Status
When the Enable In Progress billing status option is enabled in Practice Preferences > Encounters, you can enable additional options to ensure that new encounters created in the practice automatically default to In Progress status.
- Access NextGen® Enterprise PM.
- From the Admin menu, select Preferences, and then Practice.
The Practice Preferences window opens.
- From the Preferences List, select Encounters.
- Enable In Progress Billing.
CAUTION:Once In Progress Billing has been enabled, it cannot be disabled. It should only be enabled when needed.
- To default all new encounters created in the practice to In Progress status, select the Default all new encounters to In Progress check box.
- To limit the default In Progress status to only new encounters created with a specific location or specialty or program, complete the following fields:
- Limit to Valid Locations: To limit the default In Progress status to only new encounters created with a specific location, select the locations here. The In Progress check box on the Create Encounter window is automatically selected (checked) when one of these locations is chosen in the Service Location field.
Leave blank if the default In Progress status is not based on the location selected on new encounters.
Note: This applies to new encounters created in NextGen® Enterprise PM and NextGen® Enterprise EHR. - Limit to Valid Specialties: To limit the default In Progress status to only new encounters created with a specific provider specialty, select the specialties here. The In Progress check box on the Create Encounter window is automatically selected (checked) when a provider with one of these specialties is chosen in the Rendering field.
Leave blank if the default In Progress status is not based on the specialty of the rendering provider selected on new encounters.Note: This applies to new encounters created in NextGen® Enterprise PM and NextGen® Enterprise EHR.
- Limit to Valid Programs: To limit the default In Progress status to only new encounters created with a specific program, select the programs here. The In Progress check box on the Create Encounter window is automatically selected (checked) when one of these programs is chosen in the Program field.

- Limit to Valid Locations: To limit the default In Progress status to only new encounters created with a specific location, select the locations here. - To save changes and close the window, select OK.
