Master Lists Descriptions
Some of the master lists can be built on the fly while you use the application and if you type an entry that is not already stored in the Master List, you can add it at that time.
The following table describes the master lists that come with installing the NextGen applications and whether they can be built on the fly.

Address Type | Describes the type of address information. For example, mailing, home, or temporary address. You can select the address type in the Add/Modify Person Information window. |
Appointment Cancellation Reasons | The reason for canceling an appointment can be captured on the Add/Modify Person Information window. The reasons display only if the Track cancellation reason check box is selected in the Appt Scheduling list on the Practice Preferences window. The Appointment Cancellation Reasons master list can be built on the fly. |
Appointment Incomplete Reasons | The reason for marking an appointment as incomplete is captured whenever you change an appointment's status to incomplete. |
Appointment Rescheduling Reasons | The reason for rescheduling an appointment is captured whenever you change an appointment's date or time. The reasons display only if the Track rescheduling reason check box is selected in the Appt Scheduling list on the Practice Preferences window. The Appointment Rescheduling Reasons master list can be built on the fly. |
Bad Debt Statuses | The Bad Debt Statuses master list, when selected, restricts activity to the patient chart to payments and adjustments only. If a chart has a status of Bad Debt, the provider is unable to treat the patient until the chart and account returns to a good standing. |
Blood Quantum | The Blood quantum master list is used by the Indian Health Service (IHS) to indicate an individual's percentage of Indian ancestry. The IHS uses blood quantum for reporting purposes. The Blood Quantum field appears on the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when the tab is enabled. |
Case Category | Case categories are associated with specific cases and are used on case templates in NextGen® Enterprise. Case categories can be set as private to restrict user access. Case types in the Case Type master file consist of case categories. For example, the Private case type can have case categories such as: Mobile Services, 24 Hour Nurse Triage, Urgent Care, Consulting, CMCA, and None. |
Case Contact Role | The Case Contact Role master list contains the type of people that are contacted regarding or are involved in a patient's case. For example, attorney, case manager, and insurance adjuster. The Case Contact Role master list is used when you modify the case contacts in NextGen® Enterprise EHR, and NextGen® Enterprise PM. This item can be set as private to restrict user access. |
Case Markets | Case markets are used to classify cases for NextGen® Enterprise EHR. The Case Markets master list can be set as private to restrict user access. Restricted case markets are set in the System Administrator application. |
Church | You can add the names of physical churches that people attend to the Church master list. The Church field is located on the Person/Patient Information window. You can use this field for reporting and collecting demographic data about the patients. The Churches master list can be built on the fly. |
Classification/Beneficiary | The Classification/Beneficiary master list is required by the Indian Health Service (IHS) for reporting purposes to indicate a patient's IHS classification for benefits. The Classification/Beneficiary field appears on the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when the tab is enabled. |
Community Code | Community codes represent city, county, or state regions that must be included in the annual IHS report for funding. The values in the Community Code master list appears as selections in the Community Cd field of the Demographics tab of the patient chart in NextGen® Enterprise PM. |
Contact Preferences | Indicates the method by which a person or a patient prefers to be contacted. For example, cell phone, or email address. The Contact Preference field appears in NextGen® Enterprise PM if you select the Display Contact Preference option on the General tab. |
Contract Subgrouping | Contract Subgrouping enables practices to filter their reports based on the contract subgrouping categories. You can also assign participating provider status by contract subgroup and link the contracts to payers according to the financial class. |
Counties | A county is a political and administrative division of a state. County is located on windows that capture address information. The Counties master list can be built on the fly. |
Countries | Indicates the country a person lives in. The Country field appears on the Demographics tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM and NextGen® Enterprise EHR. |
Credentialing | Enables you to track location and provider accreditation. You can apply these credentials in the Credentialing tab of Locations and Providers master files. |
Departments | You can assign departments to procedures in the Service Items library, to group revenue or to report by category. The Department field appears in the Service Items library only if the option to display it is selected in the Libraries practice preferences. |
Descendancy | Indicates a patient's descendancy. For example, a patient could be of Cherokee descendancy on the mother's side. This field is not required for IHS reporting, but can be used for tracking purposes for your practice. The Descendancy field appears on the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when the tab is enabled. |
Diagnosis Subgroupings | Diagnosis subgroupings are categories that practices can use to group diagnoses together for reporting purposes. This master list is used for both Diagnosis Subgrouping 1 and Diagnosis Subgrouping 2 fields located in theDiagnosis Codes library tab. |
eRx Custom Denial Reasons | Custom reasons that display along with the Surescripts® denial codes in NextGen® Enterprise to explain why an electronic refill request is being denied. Although you can type up to 100 characters for the description, only the first 70 are sent through Surescripts® to the pharmacy because Surescripts® supports 70-character maximum. |
Ethnicity | Indicates an individual's identity separate from race. For example, a person might be part of one racial category but is from Cuba and therefore identifies themself as being of Latino identity. You can use this information for reporting and collecting demographic data about your patients for general use and for UDS reporting. Depending on your Enterprise Preferences settings, the Ethnicity field can display on either the Demographics tab or the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window. The Ethnicity master list can be manually mapped to the Ethnicity Category table in the Ethnicity Category Mapping master file. |
Financial Classes | Financial Classes groups payers together for revenue reporting. This master list is used in the Payers master file. |
Homeless Status | Indicates a person's residential condition at the time of service. For example, not homeless or transitional. This status is used at the chart level for UDS reporting and at the encounter level for HRSA reporting. The Homeless Status field for UDS reporting appears on the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when it is enabled. The Homeless Status field for HRSA reporting appears on the General tab of the Encounter Maintenance window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when it is enabled. |
IHS Eligibility Status | IHS Eligibility Status is required by the Indian Health Service (IHS) for reporting purposes to indicate eligibility for services based on a patient's tribal affiliation. The IHS Eligibility Status field appears on the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when the tab is enabled. |
Implantable Device Inactive Reason | You can select an Implantable Devices Inactive Reason in NextGen® Enterprise EHR to explain the reason for deactivating an implantable device record. |
Language | The Language master list is a standard list of languages. Language is located in the Person/Patient Information window. You can use this field for reporting and collecting demographic data about your patients. To select a language that is not available (hidden), you must clear the Hide check box for that language. |
Language Barrier | Indicates whether an individual is best served by a language other than English or with sign language. The Language Barrier field is used for UDS reporting and it appears on the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when it is enabled. |
Location Subgroupings | Enables practices to filter their reports based on the practice service location and the location subgrouping categories. |
Marketing Plans | Marketing Plans master list is used to set up the Market Plan master file. |
Migrant Worker Status | Indicates the type of agricultural worker a person is. For example, not a migrant worker and seasonal. This status is used for UDS reporting. The Migrant Worker Status field appears on the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when the tab is enabled. |
Modalities | You can assign Modality to procedures in the Service Items library to describe the category of service. It will appear in the Service Items library only if it is selected in the Libraries practice preference. |
Name Prefix | Name prefixes are titles used before a person's first name to indicate more information about the person. For example, Dr, Mr, and Mrs. The items in the Name Prefix master list appear as options in the Prefix field in the Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise EHR and NextGen® Enterprise PM. |
Name Suffix | Name suffixes are titles used after a person's last name to indicate more information about the person. For example, Jr, Sr, Esq, PhD, and Roman numerals like II or III. The items in the Name Suffix master list appear as options in the Suffix field in the Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise EHR and NextGen® Enterprise PM. |
Occupations | Occupations field is located on the Employment Profile window. You can use this field for reporting and collecting demographic data about your patients. The Occupations master list can be built on the fly. |
Patient Status Change Reasons | Describes the reason for a change in patient's status. Users can select these reasons on the Status tab when they modify patient information on the patient chart. |
Patient Types | Patient type is assigned on the Encounter Maintenance window and classifies patients for reporting purposes. You can enter patient types such as Medicare Beneficiary or Worker's Comp. A default patient type can be set in the Encounters practice preference. |
Payer Subgroupings | Enables the practice to place payers in groups for reporting and billing purposes. |
PDMP Gateway Role | Describes the role type of the PDMP Gateway provider. Users with prescriptive authority can request for and view a patient's PDMP report by selecting the PDMP Gateway Role. You can select PDMP Gateway Role on the Practice tab of the Modify Provider Information window.

Portal - Patient Enrollment Responses | Enable users to set up a list of patient responses that can be used in NextGen® Enterprise EHR or NextGen® Enterprise PM to document that a given patient currently wishes to defer or decline to enroll in NextGen® PxP Portal. The responses can also be used to document that a patient does not have an email address or that the patient refuses to provide an email address. The default Portal – Patient Enrollment Responses values are:

Preferred Pronoun | Enables users to select the patient's preferred pronoun in Patient/Person Information window.

Prescribed Meds Custom Deletion Reasons | Enables you to create custom reasons (up to 25 character each) that explains why a prescribed medication is being deleted. By default, the list contains the Entered in error reason. You cannot modify or hide this system default reason. |
Privacy Notices | Enables you to set up status information for privacy notices. For example, Patient signed can be a Privacy Notice status. |
Program Category | You can use program categories for setting up clinical options for a program. You can select Program Category on the Clinical tab of the Add/Modify Program Information window using the Programs master file. |
Provider Expiration Reasons | Indicates why a provider is no longer the default provider for a specific patient. These reasons are only used when a patient's default provider is permanently changed. The items in the Provider Expiration Reasons master list appear in the Expiration Reason field of the Add Patient Provider window in NextGen® Enterprise PM. |
Provider Subgroupings | Enables the practice to group providers into subgroups, such as allergy, oncology, or obstetrics, for reporting and billing purposes. |
Provider Types | Provider Type master list is used in the Provider master file to classify providers for reporting purposes. |
Public Housing Primary Care | Indicates that an individual is serviced by a Public Housing Primary Care program. The Public Housing Primary Care field is used for UDS reporting and appears on the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when the tab is enabled. |
Publicity Codes | Indicates how a patient (or the patient's guardian) wants to be notified for immunization recalls. File Maintenance enables you to define publicity codes. |
Race | Indicates an individual's racial category. You can use this information for reporting and collecting demographic data about your patients for general use and for UDS reporting. Depending on your Enterprise Preference settings, the Race field can appear on either the Demographics tab or the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window.

Reason Code Subgroupings | Enables practices to filter their reports based on the reason code subgrouping categories. In addition, you can use these subgroups when you set up task types that include reason codes. |
Recall Plan Stop Reasons | Indicates the reason for stopping the recall plan. For example, appointment completed, patient is deceased, and recall added in error. The reasons in the Recall Plan Stop Reasons master list are used in the patient chart. |
Religion | The Religion field is located on Person/Patient Information window. You can use this field in reporting and collecting demographic data about your patients. |
Revenue Code Category | Revenue codes are used on electronic 837I and paper UB04 institutional claims. Revenue Code Categories can be used in the Revenue Codes master file to group individual codes. For example, revenue codes 0911 - 0919 can all be linked to the 'Behavioral Health Treatment/Services' revenue code category. The Revenue Code Category can also be used in the Institutional Billing library to define the 'Type of Bill' code (TOB) that appears on claims for all revenue codes in the category. TOB fills the 2300 CLM05 segment on electronic 837I claims, and FL 4 on paper UB04 claims. |
School Based Health Center | Indicates that an individual receives primary healthcare services at a school-based health center. The School Based Health Center field is used for UDS reporting and appears on the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when the tab is enabled. |
Service Type | Identifies service types that are used in CHC federal reports like Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Services Report (RSR) and UDS reports. The service types are represented on the encounter and, subsequently, by the reports to group data based on these types of services. The items in the master list are used in the Service Type field on the Encounter Maintenance window in NextGen® Enterprise PM.

Task Completion Reasons | Indicates the reason for completing a task. This may not always be the result of a task being finished. For example, an unfinished task could exist due to lack of information or because someone is waiting on results. |
Task Subgroupings | Categories that practices can use to group tasks together for manageability and reporting purposes. In addition, you can use these subgroups as search criteria in the Worklog Manager. The Task Subgroupings master list is used for both the Subgrouping 1 and Subgrouping 2 fields. |
Transaction Category user-defined name | Transaction Category user-defined name lists is created for the Transaction Category field in the Batch Header window and in the Remittance Profile library. This master list only displays if you select the Enable batch transaction category field check box on the General tab on the Enterprise Preferences window and it is named with the name in the Caption field. The Transaction Category master list enables you to group transactions for reporting to determine which billing offices the transactions belong to. Reference: For more information, see . |
Tribal Affiliation | The Tribal Affiliation master list is used by the Indian Health Service (IHS) for reporting purposes to indicate the Indian tribe, band, nation, group, pueblo, or community that an individual is a member of. The Tribal Affiliation field appears on the UDS tab of the Add/Modify Patient/Person Information window in NextGen® Enterprise PM when the tab is enabled. |
Type of Benefit | Benefits can be either preferred or all types. Preferred benefits refer to the benefits of specific service types that are defined for a patient in Practice Preferences. All benefits refer to information such as type of coverage, in- and out-of-network deductible, co-pay, and out-of-pocket amounts. You can select Type of Benefit on the Eligibility and Benefit Information window. |
Vaccine Manufacturer | The Vaccine Manufacturer master list enables you to create external IDs to use when the NextGen applications interface with state immunization registries. |
XDS Class Code | The XDS Class Code master list contains codes that define the type of document that is sent to an XDS Affinity Domain. |
XDS Confidentiality | The XDS Confidentiality master list contains codes that represent who can share information , such as None and Normal Restricted, in documents sent to an XDS Affinity Domain. |
XDS Format | The XDS Format master list contains codes that specify the format of a document sent to an XDS Affinity Domain. |
XDS Healthcare Facility | The XDS Healthcare Facility master list contains codes that define the type of organizational setting of the clinical encounter in the documents sent to an XDS Affinity Domain. |
XDS Practice | The XDS Practice master list contains codes that represent the type of medical specialty in the documents sent to an XDS Affinity Domain. |
XDS Type | The XDS Type master list contains codes that represent the classification of the documents sent to an XDS Affinity Domain. |
Zones | Identifies geographical areas and regions and are used by NextGen® Enterprise EHR. The Zones master list is user-defined and is filled manually. |
