Prescribe a New Medication

You can prescribe a new medication to a patient from the Medication Search window. Note: NextGen® Enterprise EHR automatically checks a new prescribed medication against the patient’s other prescribed medications and displays an alert if a drug interaction exists. NextGen® Enterprise EHR displays an alert for inactive ingredients with the associated allergic reactions and the percentage of available formulation that contains the inactive ingredients. Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR. Open Medications module. Select Prescribe New. The Medication Search window opens. Search for a medication. Note: If you select a medication that is a duplicate of an active or a pending medication for the patient, or if you select a medication that has contraindications to an existing patient's diagnosis, NextGen® Enterprise EHR displays a warning message. Select a SIG

After you enter the required medication information, you must select a SIG. Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR and access the Medications module. Select a medication. Enter all required medication information. Select or build a SIG. The selected SIG is automatically assigned to the medication. If the SIG contains more characters than the display allows, the text is truncated. If you hover the cursor over the truncated text, a tooltip displays the complete SIG. If the SIG exceeds the 140-character maximum for electronic prescriptions, an alert appears next to the SIG text. Select a SIG You can change the quantity and the interval of the medication by either typing the values or using the arrows to select the appropriate values. Enter Additional Medication Information

You can set up or add additional information for the medication after you have entered the required medication information. Enter required medication information. To select the unit in the Units list, do one of the following: Select a unit of measure from the list. Enter a unit of measure up to a maximum of 32 characters. If the medication is an oral liquid medication, the field automatically displays Milliliter and cannot be changed. Additional Medication Information If the Units field is left blank, the auto-population feature that is used for prescribing new medications is used for the renewal while renewing a medication. In the Comments filed, enter non-clinical comments to the pharmacist of up to a maximum of 250 characters. For ePrescribing, the maximum characters limit is 210 characters. Renew Medications

You can renew any medication that was prescribed to a patient and subsequently saved to a patient's chart. The Start Date field in the Medications List automatically displays the date a medication is first prescribed. The first time a medication is dispensed in a renew chain, both the Original Start Date and Start Date fields in the Medications List display the same date. When the medication is renewed, the Original Start Date field remains the same while the Start Date field reflects the date of the renewal. Highlight the Inactive medication to renew. Select Renew. The Medications module displays the prescription status information for the selected medication above the medication name. The following status is displayed: Medication is Inactive Medication Was Prescribed In A Different Practice Encounter is Locked for This Medication Depending on the prescription status of the medication, you may not be able to renew the selected medication. Additional Prescription Fields

You can fill the following additional fields to provide more details for prescribing medication. Field Description Non-Clinical Notes to Pharmacy Enter non-clinical instructions on dispensing medication to pharmacy. You can enter up to a maximum of 70 characters. Note: If your medication is from a favorite group, the comments you enter for the group in NextGen® Enterprise EHR appears in the Non-Clinical Notes to Pharmacy field. If needed, you can edit the fields for your patient. Provider Displays the current default provider identified for the patient in System Administrator. NextGen® Mobile uses this provider, and not the currently logged on provider, to establish the necessary eprescribing permissions. Note: A provider can prescribe a Controlled Substances (CS) medication only if the provider has necessary ePCS permissions and the provider relationship is set as self in System Administrator.
