The Medications module supports the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Federal Regulations that restrict the number of refills for controlled medications (CII). Electronic Prescriptions

You can electronically submit a prescription directly to a selected pharmacy. The ePrescribing feature uses the Surescripts retail and mail-order networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator. You should remember the following points before submitting prescriptions electronically: Any medication you submit electronically must have a valid patient's Rx eligibility request, a valid SIG, a numeric quantity value, and a unit type. When resubmitting (including responding to refill requests) a medication previously prescribed without a valid unit type, you must update the unit type to a valid value. You can submit controlled substances electronically only if ePCS is set up. User-defined medications are not supported with Surescripts. You cannot send a medication that is not DEA Schedule 0 without the required setup. If you need supervision, you cannot send a prescription without selecting the appropriate supervising physician. DEA Restrictions for Refills

The Medications module supports the following Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) restrictions: DEA controlled medications Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 cannot be refilled. DEA controlled medications Schedule 3, Schedule 4, and Schedule 5 are set to have a maximum of 5 (five) refills with a default refill value set to 0 (zero). If you have selected a higher number of refills than allowed by the DEA Federal Regulations, the DEA Limit Warning window opens. DEA Limit Warning On the DEA Limit Warning window, you can do one or more of the following: To add the medication with the selected number of refills, you can select Yes, with Requested Amnt. To add the medication with the maximum number of refills allowed by the DEA Federal Regulations, you can select Yes, with Max Allowed. To edit the number of refills, you can select No. If you do not want to see the DEA Limit Warning message, you can select Never show DEA Limit Warnings. DEA Application Requirements

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) requires the application to restrict printing, faxing, and electronically prescribing controlled substances. The application applies the following rules for controlled substances: If you printed or faxed a controlled substance prescription, you cannot electronically send that prescription. If you electronically prescribe a controlled substance, you can print or fax that prescription. The printed or faxed report indicates that the printed or faxed copy is not for dispensing. If you electronically prescribe a controlled substance and the transmission fails, you can print or fax that prescription. The printed or faxed report shows a message stating the prescription was originally sent electronically to a pharmacy. The report also shows the following information: The pharmacy’s name The date and time of the eRx message A notification that the eRx message failed Note: The application meets the DEA cryptography requirements.
